I was in Vancouver for a few days and spent some time testing out the video mode of my 7d. All random stuff, no theme or story; just cut to music.

Equipment used: 7D w/ 17-55mm 2.8IS, Glidecam HD-2000, and.......rollerblades :)

Color Correction was done in Color and I used the "super-flat" custom profile to help increase the dynamic range for post. 100% 720p 60 conformed to 24p.

I included a bunch of clips featuring moire to demonstrate what you can/can't get away with when shooting deep focus shots. Thanks for watching!

Very nice, does your 7d heat up when shooting alot of video?
  • Brandon Moza 2 years ago
I haven't had any issues with it overheating or getting hot. It might have helped that it was attached to metal plates which probably helped to dissipate the heat. But even shooting handheld for extended periods has shown no problems for me.

Thanks for checking out my video.
  • Beyond Awareness plus 2 years ago
thanks for letting me know that because I'm considering getting the 7D myself and from research on forums and even comments on Vimeo I heard alot of people complaining about it heating up. Thanks Again

You make the RED one look like a waste of money hahah seriously great job! Also what brand was the lens. Its extremely clear.
  • Simon Packman 2 years ago
thanks. Also i haven't had any problems with my 7D overheating... It may be a factory error in like 1/1000 of the batteries or 1/1000 of the 7D's made.

What was the f-stop of most of these shots?
  • Brandon Moza 2 years ago
If it wasn't pointed at a clear sky, 5.6. It there is some clear sky in frame I had it around 9. For the darker overcast shots near the end I had it at 2.8. I kept the shutter around 120.

You make this camera loooook sooo good. Thanks for the tips btw. I just got "super flat" insanely better for post.. I'll be sure to buy some roller blades.

  • Is the super-flat mode the mode Philip Bloom uses in his new 7D training video?
  • Brandon Moza 2 years ago
I'm not sure. I still haven't had the chance to see Philip Boom's video. But if you're interested in checking out custom profiles I recommend you watch this: vimeo.com/7256322
  • Ludovic Jolivet plus 2 years ago
I believe Bloom just lowered contrast -4, sat -2 in camera PP... whereas superflat01 is software made where all curves are modified so in theory more accurate... but I haven't tested it;)

Really beautiful. Amazing pictures and the slowmo adds a lot of tension to it. But to be honest: this is one of the few videos on the net that I'd like to see with a little heavier Color Grading (more noise!) :D

Beautiful- great impromptu tracks and spot-on grading. How did you set it for super-flat? In my limited testing, I noticed the range was lacking- it'd be great to know how to work around that.
  • Brandon Moza 2 years ago
I make sure that when I'm doing my metering that there is part sky in the shot. That's pretty much it.

Also, I recommend watching this video on custom profiles if you haven't already; it was a huge help for me: vimeo.com/7256322

Wow great stuff Brandon. What did you do in Color?
  • Brandon Moza 2 years ago
I increased the highlights; particularly the blues. Added a yellow tint. Lowered the mid-tones a bit and increased the contrast a bunch. And then added a vignette.

Glidecam and rollerblades, man that is creative. I guess it was quite a workout.... did your arms hurt after the shooting? Great job man!
  • Brandon Moza 2 years ago
Surprisingly no. I carry the camera with my other arm when not in use. My feet hurt more than anything. Rollerblading on brick sidewalks and cobblestone becomes a little painful after a while

Will the 5d and 7d kill off traditional film making with HDV and 35mm adapters? is Redrock and other in trouble?
  • Simon Packman 2 years ago
there are 2 things that are in the way of the 5D,7D, or any other dslr video camera replacing higher end cameras like the HVX, EX-1, RED one...

    1. DSLR's don't have raw video...
    2. Jello effect with fast panning..

But if you do it right you won't get the jello or have problem color grading your video, especially canon. Canon's firmware is great.
  • Ludovic Jolivet plus 2 years ago
...and... EX1 + 35 kit has a more organic look + more control over the camera settings... etc
I have both 5d and EX1, love them both, just not comparable:)
  • Caleb Stephens plus 2 years ago
Also you cant forget the moire and aliasing on the canons.
  • Asta 2 years ago
And there is one more difference between EX!+35 kit and one of the EOS-Models: The price! The EX-1 and the redrock come to about 8000 $ the 7D with the redrock-rig cost togeather about 3000 $. That make a real difference.
  • Simon Packman 2 years ago
EX-1 is for people with money plus it is a huge flippin camera when u have the redrock and a 35mm adapter with a telephoto film lens on the end of it. You can film a scene in a super market, a diner, a bank, practically anywhere with a 7D cuz it is a still camera body. If i wanted to shoot ex-1 i wouldn't.... Id rent a red one. 7D is inexpensive and good for improving your skill as a cinematographer and director. While producing pretty damn good images.
  • Seiishu 2 years ago
@Simon Packman - you said these two things are in the way of 5D and 7D replacing higher end cameras:

    1. DSLR's don't have raw video...
    2. Jello effect with fast panning..

    ---

    1. Well... maybe not for so long. It's still a rumour because it is not officially confirmed, but still:
    canonrumors.com/2009/09/raw-video-for-5d2-7d/#comments

    2. Jello effect has nothing to do with DSLR. I had Samsung HD camcorder and I had Sony HD camcorder. None of them was DSLR as we know, and still they both had jello effect when panning quickly. So, nothing to do with DSLR, rather with processors not being able to process such a large number of very large images in just one second.

Awesome video, really great feel from the smooth motion. Just curious, what was your average ISO setting? I find that my 7D produces a lot of noise over 1000 ISO.
  • Brandon Moza 2 years ago
The overcast shots were shot at 600. Daylight 100. Indoors was around 600, maybe a bit higher. In general, I try to keep it below 1600

That was great! I am considering buying the Mark II. Have you had any shooting time with the M-II?
  • Brandon Moza 2 years ago
Nope, sorry. If you haven't used a DSLR to shoot video before I would strongly recommend going to a camera shop and trying it out before you buy. They're about as far from point and shoot as it gets when it comes to video. I have an ever growing list of things not to with the camera just because of its limitations. Just a heads up that's all :)
  • Screaming Panda 2 years ago
I would love to see that list of things not to do with the 7D. Also, out of curiosity what kind of rollerblades do you use?

IS was on 100% of the time. I consider it pretty essential. By the end of shooting this i've probably captured 4 hours of footage using my glidecam. I still have a long ways to go. The slow motion and quick cuts hides a lot of my mistakes.

    thanks for checking it out

    you + 7D = awesomeness!

your 7D video looks better than anything else I've seen on vimeo... I have no doubt it's in large part your own talent + the techniques you mention.

but the clarity looks substantially better too... is it because of the lens you're using? ie, is the lens you're using a lot better than the standard W/15-85 EF-S USM IS LENS, or W/18-135 EF-S IS LENS that come with the standard 7D packages?
  • Brandon Moza 2 years ago
    wow, thanks!

I think the clarity that you are speaking from is coming from using custom picture profiles to sustain as much detail and dynamic range as possible until the footage is on your computer. Sort of like taking pictures in a RAW format. The footage looks terrible straight out of the camera when you shoot this way, and that's a good thing in this case. :)

check out vimeo.com/7256322 to see what I mean.

    Ditto on the kudos!

Did you do any of the overcranking / slo-mo in post or was that all in camera?
  • Brandon Moza 2 years ago
I didn't do anything to the footage in post other than color grading. No software stabilization or software slow-motion.

It is all 60p footage conformed to play back at 24fps
  •
  • Burgeon Media pro 2 years ago
Hey Ditto, in the tech settings it says he shot it in 60 and converted in post.

Which ties in to my question. What are your time line settings for this? Actually, could I pick your brain about the process. I've been struggling for years to work with over cranked footage in post (when I edit, not when an editor does it). Let me know dan.a.ramirez@gmail.com Thanks in advance!
  • Brandon Moza 2 years ago
I take the 60p footage and conform it to 24fps using cinema tools which is part of Final Cut Studio. It basically changes the video file to make play back at 24fps. From there I have video clips that are 24p and are playing back at 40% of their actual speed. So it's all edited on a 720p 24 fps timeline.

  • Very nice mate. Well exposed. Nice grade. So you shot this with picture style 'zeroed' then graded In post? Is that right. I'm fAirly excited about using the picture style tool to grade in camera. I'm aware that this will limit the scope in post though.

  • AMAZING VIDEO!!! thank you for sharing. I am looking at finally getting a new Canon ( i have the 20D now) and am thinking about the 7D! Is the Glidecam HD 2000 on the arm?? it creates amazingly smooth image. Would i be able to snowboard with it (in your opinion??) If you have two minutes, can you please fire me off an e-mail and let me know what you think. Thanks
  • Brandon Moza 2 years ago
    Thanks

I don't have the vest or the arm, I hold it by hand. And yes, you would certainly be able to snowboard with it. Might have to keep it slow as the wind resistance will move your rig all over the place... :)

And if you happen to throw the alignment off it could prove to be very difficult to adjust with cold hands; I've had that problem lol. I hope it works out though, sounds like fun to me :P
  • James Wong 2 years ago
    :)

i read from glidecam website - it suggest HD-4000 for 5D2+lens.. and now 7D is even heavier than 5D2 XD
so do u think HD-2000 is enough for 7D+lens?

    thx~

Sweet video! I love the grading, super rich colors. Thanks for posting the tut too! I've got to hand it to you for donning the blades and the glidecam, a brave move. Take that from a guy who's wiped out 5k of still gear on a skateboard. Are you flying anything other than the 7d & lens in the vid? Keep up the good work.
  • Brandon Moza 2 years ago
Ouch! I hope most of your gear was salvageable. I was pretty comfortable on the rollerblades but got a ton of strange looks and concerned questions for it :)
