Pikes Peak is a mountain in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains within Pike National Forest, 10 mi (16 km) west of Colorado Springs, Colorado, in El Paso County in the United States of America. At 14,115 feet (4,302 m), it is one of Colorado's 54 fourteeners, mountains that rise more than 14,000 feet (4,300 m) above mean sea level, and rises 8,400 feet (2,600 m) above the city of Colorado Springs.
The road is famous because of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC), also known as The Race to the Clouds; an annual automobile and motorcycle hillclimb to the summit of Pikes Peak. The track measures 12.42 miles (19.99 km) over 156 turns, climbing 4,720 ft (1,440 m) from the start at Mile 7 on Pikes Peak Highway, to the finish at 14,110 ft (4,300 m), on grades averaging 7%.
When I was a child, my father used to tell me the stories of Ari Vatanen and Michèle Mouton driving on this road, on that American mountain. According to him, it was the hardest race car in the world. Me and my older brother were fascinated by this mountain, this drivers and this road where crazy "unlimited" cars could compete. Then, as a teenager, I played Gran Turismo on Playstation and I "drove" crazy car on that road thanks to a video game.
In October 2013, I've rented a car and I've driven to the Clouds...
