Simulation is an attractive approach for controlling interactive characters, but it can be unpredictable and computationally expensive. In this talk, Professor Horswill will discuss a number of techniques from robotics, physical simulation, and constraint satisfaction that can be implemented relatively cheaply and easily. He will describe Twig, a system for procedurally animating interactive characters using powered ragdolls and techniques imported from neuropsychology and behavior-based robotics. Additionally, this presentation will cover Professor Horswill’s ongoing work on procedural content generation using constraint satisfaction techniques.
