The hamlets of Chappaqua and Millwood make up the Town of New Castle, with Chappaqua the larger of the two. Most people refer to the Town of New Castle as Chappaqua. New Castle covers twenty-four square miles. Over one-third of the land is undeveloped and dedicated to open space, giving its residents a wonderful feeling of country living while only thirty five miles from Manhattan. The town has a long and rich history stretching back to the 1730s when it was predominantly settled by Quakers. For almost two centuries, the area was primarily agricultural, and its major products were milk, apples, vinegar and pickles. It did have some local factories, and in 1939 Chappaqua became the home of one major corporation, The Readers' Digest. Eventually, many of its farms were consolidated into large estates. The town has a fine reputation for religious tolerance and outstanding public education. It has also been home to famous Americans such as Horace Greeley, as well as President and Mrs. Clinton.
