East Elmhurst quickly became a magnet to middle class African-America in the early to mid 1900s because it was one of the few areas that allows African-American to become homeowners. It has been regarded as "the most stable census tract for homeowners in the city, with an average tenure of more than 30 years" by the NY Times, 2011
