UPDATE: My 7D is no longer accepting firmware updates, which means that unfortunately I have been locked out of further development on the camera. Until I find a workaround, I've shifted work to the 5D Mark 2 and 550D.

This demonstrates the first steps to getting Magic Lantern running on the Canon 7D. It is not very interesting yet since I don't have all of the internals sorted out. The boot process takes a very long time since the Canon firmware is verifying the SHA1 signature of the entire flasher program, which is pretty slow on the ARM9. This will hopefully speed up once we're able to either enable autobooting from the CF card or bypass the signature checks.

This is brilliant. Just bought a 7d and look forward to seeing what you come up with.
Also just made a donation, and wanted to make a bit o a feature request.
I do a lot of timelapse (see my Vimeo account) and was wondering if it's possible to have an intervalometer built into Magic Lantern, and could it be possible to take a full rez photo without firing any of the mechanical SLR bits? Such as using live mode?
    Thanks

Trammel thank you so much for all your hard work on magic lantern for both the 5dmkii, and now even for my very own 7D!!!! I cannot express how excited I am to be able to monitor audio levels, output to external monitors in 1080i while recording and have zebras on my 7D. Man this is exciting. I am reading a lot about 7D, the money is tight here, but i did my purchase of my 7D and it will be here in some days... But i am reading a LOT of mixed reviews about 7D. I am becaming worried, but i am sure i will love the camera. My only gripes are on the "Mud"/Soft look of the images on 7D could be solved together with the "ALIAS" problem. I don't know how much i must believe on that mixed reviews. But Magic Lantern is a hope for some of 7D problems/missing feats for sure.

    Great and Amazing Work Trammell.

Never though all this would be possible, that with great hardware incredible things can be achieved with software on a camera, which makes the canon 7D even more versatile.

    Hello !

With the issue regardging it working with the 500D i have a group of people on the Cinema 5D forums, who would be willing to pay for you to go about hacking, it i dont know any other way to get hold of you so i thought here.

Here is the link to my petition to canon but many people have said they would pay you to try and crack it:

    cinema5d.com/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=9332

So if it is possible to do so or attempt we would put a fund together before you attempt it.

    Thanks !

Trammell, the new canon t2i has a feature in the menu, allowing you to set the ISO to only go up to certain number within auto ISO mode (800, 1000,1600, ect.). Would that be possible to be add to the 7d firmware? It would be sweet.
If you could teach me how to program, I would gladly do it :)

  •
  • Nick Fitzhugh plus 1 year ago
Not sure if it's possible or not, but it would great if the firmware were able to allow two mono audio inputs which could be recorded at different levels. Seems as though technically this should be possible by using an adapter to split the single stereo jack into two mono jacks and then let the firmware understand each as different channels.

I don't think we'll ever see MagicLantern for the 7D either.. and more effort is probably being devoted to the 5D MarkII
  •
  • Markus Wernig 1 year ago
OK, so let's recap - the need for Magic Lantern on the 5DMII has somewhat decreased after this camera now has manual audio control and a histogram through Canon's latest firmware update. I know that Magic Lantern does more than that, but manual audio has got to be one of the main reasons why people used to turn to Magic Lantern for their 5DMIIs.

Cinema5D just posted an NAB interview with Canon USA's Tim Smith cinema5d.com/news/?p=3176 in which he basically says that Canon has no immediate plans to bring those 5DMII firmware enhancements (manual audio, histogram etc.) to either the 7D or the 1DMIV. Hard to believe that a company can be that stubborn and short sighted, but that was the official word...

So in other words, Tammell, we need you more than ever!!!! Please, please, please! Every 7D owner who wants to record decent audio in-camera is looking at you right now. With this announcement from Canon, Magic Lantern for the 7D has become a real urgent need. I'd donate again if there was a realistic chance that this firmware upgrade was going to happen any time soon. Thanks.

good luck guys!you are making a good job...just a question...could be possible with your firmware to have a full HD output from the HDMI output of the camera douring the recording??thanks...

With the latest (lamest) firmware update for the 7D, it is very much evident that we are not going to see the spoils of the last 5D firmware update. I, too, will make a donation if there is still work ongoing on a ML 7D version. Otherwise, will someone please start a petition online to get Canon to make this much needed changes? Over 32,000 people have watched this little video from Trammel - 32,000 names on a petition is nothing to sneeze at. Start a petition and post the link on every 7D forum!

I too have thinking about eating my shirt. Instead, I am starting to think about selling my moire producing AGC happy Canon EOS 7D to buy the GH1 and get on with it, since I have even more lenses I can use on it, will have money left over for a Hn4 and with the new datarate firmware hack from tester 13, it looks more promising than this.

Tramm I appreciate the work you've done, but, we really need an update from you! With an update and projected release date, I'd be willing to make a donation!

    Hey folks read this groups.google.com/group/ml-devel/browse_thread/thread/648f25d8d543e58?pli=1

    Is from MAgic Lantern

"Unfortunately, on the 7D Canon has cranked the security settings to
"maximum", but luckily they made some significant cryptography
mistakes and we able to make sense of the 7D updates. Thanks to the
efforts of arm.indy, we fully understand the signature scheme and
can sign our own firmware images. With the latest update for the
7D, however, Canon has effectively stopped my development with what
appears to be a firmware update counter: my camera no longer accepts
the signatures, even in Canon's official firmware files."
