    Props.

    The Griffith shots were sublime.
  • Andrew Walker plus 2 years ago
Yeah someone over at the FM Forums told me about these trails that run behind Griffith and that's why I went exploring there. Great shots around that area.
  • Alex 2 years ago
gorgeous indeed! so u hiked from observatory parking, right?
  • Andrew Walker plus 2 years ago
Yes. There are a couple trails that lead North of the Observatory from the parking lot.

Awesome, you have master the art of the city timelapse.

  • Chris Mierzwinski plus 2 years ago
Love the left over rubble of 4:25. Great work. I would suggest not cutting 2:00 and 2:14 back to back. Jump cuts are actually awesome means at contrasting images but in this case the music is very chilled for the jerk created by the cut. Especially that you have two great shots like that.
  • Andrew Walker plus 2 years ago
Yeah I was thinking of not having that way but its kind weird to come back to that shot later on in the video. Someone on here I think suggested a cross fade or dissolve.
  • Paul Foryt 2 years ago
you could do a slow zoom on the previous shots to match the zoom on the second series. it might take a bit more work than a cross fade, but I think it'll look nice.

by the way, what were the specs (f stop, shutter, iso) on those pictures of the stars above the ruins and that tree? it just looks so perfect.
  • Andrew Walker plus 2 years ago
The star timelapse was shot at 15 second exposures at 3200 ISO. I think for the most part I was shooting at 1.8 2.0. Most of it was done using the Canon 24mm f1.4 mk2. But I think there were two shots in there that were done with the Sigma 20mm f1.8. Its not a bad lens for the price.

2:00 to 2:14 could use a cross fade and still work

Don't do any cross fades. That would ruin your beautiful shots that make their own fades from day to night etc. Just a bit of "darling shot" editing - cut out the second observatory shot at 2.14. Awesome pictures...

Excellent balance and execution in your work. I have a 5d Mark ii and plan on doing some HD timelapse as opposed to this stuff: vimeo.com/7688147

Are you shooting film and speeding it up or shooting photos? What settings do you recommend for the iso etc...? Im a newb so looking for as much advice and specifics that you could offer.

It must be wonderful to watch this after you added the music rendered it.

Used the 5D here with some speed ups:

I'm shooting full size RAW stills for these clips. ISO 200-250 works nice in the cities and ISO 3200 works great for the star timelapse.

This goes to show how great the 5D Mark II is. Also the choice of lens you guys had at hand. And the footage of the fires was amazing. And the City of Los Angeles never looked better then how you guys shot it. 599 Production crew must be commended for its job. And remember time lapse takes a long time to do.. Bravo 599 Production.

    Amazing timelapse!
What camera settings are used to shoot the stars at 4:50 and 5:10 ? Iso 3200, but what shutterspeed and F-stop?

    Nice work!
  • Andrew Walker plus 2 years ago
Shutter speed was 15 second exposures and the f-stop was 1.8 with a 3200 ISO. First one was shot with the Canon 24mm f1.4 mk2 and the second was shot with the Sigma 20mm f1.8.

Wow... loved it. I think there'd be a lot less war in the world if people watched more films like this.
  • Andrew Walker plus 2 years ago
Its a possibility. But I think these type of videos maybe allow some people to look inwards. So then when they do fight or cause war they at least know why they are doing it. As horrible as is sounds conflict can bring about change that can help people/society evolve. Of course it can do the opposite as well.

On average, how long did you have to wait around for the timelapses? As in, how long did they take to film?

And for the night time lapses, (especially the one with the stars) how long did you expose each picture for/how much time between each picture?
  • Andrew Walker plus 2 years ago
The shots in the city take about 30 minutes to shoot. While the shots of the stars take about 2 hours or more. On the star timelapse each frame was exposed about 15 seconds and there was no interval in between frames. They were taken one right after another.

  • Adam Suchecki 2 years ago
for the first few shots are you shooting at a higher frame rate like 10 frams a second or so, or are you just shooting a normal rate and speeding it up in post? i ask because some of these clips obviously took a long time to shoot but they are so smooth. this shit blows my mind its awesome and id love to do some like this. sry if its a newb question id just love to hear the specifics on how you shot these clips thanks!
  • Andrew Walker plus 2 years ago
Well the opening shot was shot at around an interval of 3 seconds or so and then sped up in FCP. I find it always better to start with more fames and then speed it up when needed.
  •
  • Korbinian Schmid 2 years ago
awesome! Can you tell me which city it is?
  • Andrew Walker plus 2 years ago
Most of this was shot in Los Angeles. But a couple of the shots in the beginning were shot in Cincinnati.

Just awe struck! Beautiful way to see the city in a new light/timeframe. The photography is stellar although the music distracted me at a couple points, but this is by no means a critical issue. I thought it all flowed wonderfully! Thank you!

Do you find the primes to be sharper. I find my 24-70 to be a bit soft. I like the crispness of your video.
  • Andrew Walker plus 2 years ago
I find primes to be sharper, faster and have less problems with ghosting.

WOW WOW and WOW... im utterly impressed by your new offerings...... Your website was the reason i got into photography (599productions) i saw the original few videos you had done with the 20d, and thought to myself, i need to get into this. The next day i went out amd bought the 450d (i think it is rebel something or other in usa), and have bought a few extras as well. I jumped back onto your page just today and saw a few more timelapse videos..... this blew my mind, especially around the 4.13 mark -- how on earth did you get these stars so bright??? its almost as if you have stars visible during the daylight....please please tell me how you did it. i see you upgrade at least to the 5d mark 2 -- i suppose the higher iso helped on it ( i would love the new 1D mark IV with 102400 iso, but a bit too expensive for a hobby) your choice of soundtracks are excellent as always, it provoked a good bit of emotion with the fires on the mountains for me (although my favourite has to be the gattaca soundtrack ones, just for the sheer emotion of the film then the timelapse -- it should have been used in the film with some of your clips LOL).. anyway, gotta run now, i am still experimenting with timelapse (got a short one running through photoshop at the moment), but figure best to master the camera for stills before embarking fully on the timelapse. Keep up the good work, if im out working in the USA (i travel a lot with my job), and local i would love to drop by if that would be ok with you??

Very best greetings and "slainte mhath" from Scotland (it means to your good health in Gaelic)

    Dave

The 5D2 made a lot of the shots possible on this timelapse reel. Before I had the 20D and the 40D and these cameras can produce some amazing images. But to capture the stars clearly you need something like the 5D2. Also having a full frame camera helps quite a bit as it shows what your really getting with the lenses you are using.

That shot at 4:13 was shot at ISO 3200 with the 24mm f1.4L lens. There was also a full moon out and that was the reason why it looked so bright.

  • David Thomson 1 year ago
yeah mate -- outstanding.. im looking at some higher f stops lenses at the moment, probably around the 1.8 or money wise, possibly 1.4

    Many thanks for your help
