Rendering point clouds from three phase structured light scans with depth of field using a floating point FBO and smoothed points of variable size and opacity. Some issues with this technique are described on the Open Frameworks forum openframeworks.cc/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2930

The scanning setup is the same as the one I've used for realtime scans in the past vimeo.com/5605266 Right now I'm developing an easy interface for this technique so more people can use it to capture depth information.

    hey Kyle! nice job!! ;)

  • Interesting, nice work. Looked like digital deathmasks to me. Can this method be applied to other things like landscapes and vistas as well?
  • Kyle McDonald plus 2 years ago
Thanks! Interesting take :) I suppose the shut eyes help, as the scanning method requires a bright projector.

The DOF effect can be applied to larger scale point clouds, yes. The structured light scanning technique can be applied to any scene you can project onto. I can imagine some landscapes at night, but in general it'd probably require a very bright projector.

  • I would love to see that, are you planning on doing more of these videos in the future?

Thanks for the instructables breakdown! This stuff looks amazing! How did you export to video?
  • Kyle McDonald plus 2 years ago
Thanks! The export to video can be done with the application "Decode" on Google Code code.google.com/p/structured-light/downloads/
  • Jon Howe 2 years ago
Thanks a ton! Does 'Decode' also work on OSX or is it Win32 native?
  • Kyle McDonald plus 1 year ago
The "Decode" app has an OSX installer, but I develop for Win32 so that one is generally more up to date.
