'Amchitka' was the rock concert that launched Greenpeace. It's also the concert that launched a ship: the Phyllis McCormack, which sailed out into the first Greenpeace action protesting US nuclear testing in the Aleutian Islands. Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and Phil Ochs were the performers who supported the cause, the sold-out show taking place at Vancouver's Pacific Coliseum on October 16th, 1970. (not 1972 as I mistakenly put it at the start of the video). I was 18 then, and had already seen Phil in an earlier Vancouver show, shortly after the events that took place in Chicago. At the Greenpeace show, though his voice wasn't as melodic as it once was due to injury, Phil gave a rousing performance and the crowd reciprocated by giving Phil a spontaneous standing ovation at the end of his opening set. Here are two of Phil's songs from that night. The complete Amchitka Concert is available now as a two-disc set.
