5D MKII + Steadicam Merlin footage taken on a road trip from Seattle through California last winter, visiting Redwood, Sequoia, Yosemite, and Death Valley National Parks along with Mono Lake.

Still photography from the trip at lukeallenhumphrey.com/ca

Technical things I learned or observed from this experience:

-How to better balance the 5D on the Merlin (near the end of the trip)
-I need a better tripod head like a Sachtler or Vinton for those ultra slow pans
-Two bodies would be nice vs. switching lenses in sandy conditions
-Don't leave your gloves off too long when it's snowing hard in Sequoia National Park (incurred minor frostbite)
-This was pre-firmware update so the things I learned about controlling aperture no longer apply thank god
-Death Valley winter temps can deep far below freezing at night so when camping make sure your sleeping bag is not a cheap synthetic 0 degree bag otherwise you're in for a cold night :)
-Finally a pair of gaiters probably would've been perfect for the deep post-holing you'll do hiking up some of the tallest sand dunes in North America. I made due with some rubber boots though :).

Non-technical things I learned or observed:

I met a guy near the top of one of the largest Mesquite dunes. He was the only other person out there and he had 2 hasselblads and a big backpack full of lenses and other gear. He had been commissioned to create a book about the CA wilderness so was on that mission solo for a couple months. That sounded kind of nice.

It was amazing being the only 2 people at the more remote Eureka dunes and the Racetrack playa. I wish I could do justice describing the feeling of trekking up the dunes and watching the deep sand change colors and shadows cast themselves in all sort of beautiful ways, seeing coyote tracks and wondering about the things they see as they roam the desert, watching the sunset behind the distant hills, hearing the wind blow across the landscape, seeing the stars come out and feeling the coldness of the night come on quickly as the last light of the sun fades.

Lenses: Canon L - 16-35, 70-200 2.8 IS, 180mm macro.

Music is Dayvan Cowboy from Boards of Canada and Snowflake from Trentemøller.

Holy cow Luke - this is gorgeous. I love the way you've used the wide and ultrawide lenses(especially in panning) and terrific job with the effects.

Thanks all for the comments, much appreciated. Jean what's a "life sound"? :) There is some fire crackling at 4:50, can we count that?

Wow. Great. Makes me think of something I read in "The American landscape" about Ansel Adams' view on how to get good shots. You have to be willing to walk long distances. You sure did! An what a result. Impressive.

Luke: just saw your video link from the MSFT DL. EXCELLENT choice of music. Not many people know of BoC / Trente, great to hear them get some light.

A friend posted a link to this vid this morning on facebook so I took a look. All I can say is thanks for your work, time and sharing this video. I really enjoyed it.
I spent a lot of my time traveling and climbing around the US, almost 30 years, and this film took me back to those most precious times when I felt most connected to nature and the earth. Nice job! I'm sure I'll watching it again, and again.

Thanks man, appreciate the comment. I'm actually sort of just getting into climbing, hope to do more vids as I go on more adventures.

    I don't know why, but...
I'm thinking about Gerry now !
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerry_(film)
  • Luke Humphrey plus 2 years ago
Gerry is one of my favorite films cinematographically of all time. Unfortunately due to lack of clouds I didn't really get any time lapses on this trip. That said, if I would've known what people can do with just stars and time lapses I would've tried that almost every night for 10 days.

Thanks for this video – I watched it several times, great! I`m thinking about buying the Merlin stabalizer for the 5d MkII. Are you happy witch yours? It seems to be one of the lightest on the merket and usefull for backpack trips. What do you think about this tool?

Good luck with your new projects!

    Niels.
  • Luke Humphrey plus 2 years ago
I think it's pretty good, although I haven't really tried the glidecam or the others. It is pretty compact/lightweight, just note that it doesn't work well in wind due to weight.
  • Niels Hoffmann 2 years ago
Tahnks for your answer. Think I gonna buy one. All the others are too heavy in the backpack.

    All the best,

    Niels.

How was the opening scene accomplished, were you in a helicopter ? Love your work,BTW -thanks.
  • Luke Humphrey plus 2 years ago
thanks, it's actually the steadicam held high as I sort of jog but I also thought it looked like a helicopter shot. moral: save your money on helicopters, get a tall guy to hold a steadicam :)

Real inspiring! I took a road trip this past summer from PA to CA and had a blast. Listened to the same exact music on my way too, good choice! Now that I have a better setup with my 5D, I want to go back to these places and film again. Thanks for sharing!
