great Philip - loved this one like my favourite, the 'Piccadilly Furs'; what's interesting is how wonderfully it works with no sound. I appreciate the music and how it accompanies but it so easily annotates and without the sound i was drawn even further in to the place and my feelings on watching. Watched it in silence thus 4 times straight! Thanks for sharing and inspiring!

This is my favourite of ALL Ex1 clips I have ever seen so far. This one sets the standard for me. To me, at least. This is - photography wise, timing wise, color wise - where I would like to get to. Thanks for setting this standard for me.
    Filippo.

Cheers Filippo. Like most of my pieces, all accidental. I just wanted to get a few shots up top. Decided to try and shoot surreptitiously whilst in the tram (a guide was in there), I then got more bold as he didn't seem to mind, then just went for it!
  • Filippo F. Olivieri 4 months ago
Thanks for replying Phil. You know better than I that "improvisation" at times gives us some delightful results. I love all of your videos but this one was special to me. I smiled at times (as to say, it "provoked" real emotions). The woman looking out with the cigarette. A girl jumping. There's plenty more. Amazing catches.

    Brilliant.. definitely one your best!

I'm just curious, was the camera on a tripod in the tram? I can imagine there'd be vibration there, but it looked so smooth.

  • Kaushik 4 months ago
    Philip,

I like your camera work, photography, fantastic!

In some part I found colors are oversaturated, for example the guy holding camera in his hand, his face look very much colored, his hand look very much of pinkish!

I am not sure but that guy look like that!

    Rush
  • Philip Bloom 4 months ago
he was very pink, he bathes in pink dye every morning. It's a "statement" he told me. Each to their own!
  • Kaushik 4 months ago
Are you kidding! What do mean he bathes with pink dye! And he told you that? Huh! Either you are kidding or he!
  • Jackie Birov 4 months ago
I'm pretty sure he's kidding. (Philip, not the "pink" man).
  •

So you carried a tripod with you? I guess if you are going to take the EX1 and lenses and gear might as well do it right. Very impressive as usual.

The Force is strong with you.

How did you manage the time-lapse pan at the end? Did you pan 1080p in a 720 sequence, or do you have a very steady hand?
  • Philip Bloom 4 months ago
    1080p in a 720 sequence exactly!

What really stunned me is the balance between the city lights and the sunset above it in in the last shoot at 3:00 !

In photography something like that is usually done with either double exposure or with HDR from a RAW file. What have you done? Is the EX1 really that good to give you enough data to get both parts of the shot exposed this beautifully?

And by the way, the red flag at the top of the mountain almost made me cry! :p
  • Philip Bloom 4 months ago
i didn't do anything to the shot. it just looked that good. it needed to be quite dark sky though which it was at the point. By using slow shutter it brought both the lights and the sky out
  • Moayad Hassan 4 months ago
There is no doubt about your talent, but it looks like you were also assisted by a good tool and a darn good luck :P I'm sorry, but the shot was just unnatural :)
  • Philip Bloom 4 months ago
sort of...but I know the camera well, like I know all my cameras well. I know how to get the best out of them and any camera with slow shutter could have got that shot. Alternatively if the sky was brighter I would just used a ND grad to bring the sky down a bit. So really the luck was in not getting kicked off there whilst filming it!
  • Moayad Hassan 4 months ago
    you are right :)

as i said, I don't doubt your talent or you photographic abilities.

As a matter of fact, yesterday I took a long drive around the city to find a spot where it might be possible to get a similar shot as this one and I might try my luck in capturing something similar to this, just as an experiment.

is there a possibility that you could pt some of your MBL presets online?
  • Philip Bloom 4 months ago
this was was mishandled negative. But they are all tweaked individually and are affected by the white balance and gamma etc of the camera

If I could only be half as good at capturing images like you do I will be truly amazed. Each time I see one of your clips makes me want to go out and buy an EX1 - guess I will just have to make do with the DSLR for the time being.

Thanks for the great shots and giving me something to aspire too :)

Philip, I live in Albuquerque. You have done an excellent job of showing some of the beauty from the Tram and Sandia Mountain. I am jealous of your capturing the city of Albuquerque night lights (sometimes Diamonds in the Desert). I see Sandia Mountain from my back yard every day. But your video is just amazing. Thank you for presenting it.

Those last shots are nothing short of breath taking. The lights are so crisp. Did you pan the camera manually during that timelapse? The other poster is right too. It looks like an HDR! Also I'm torn between an HVX200 and an EX1, but this has gone some way to making my choice.
