17. Images Of Papua New Guinea - Scene 1
As promised this is the first installment of my journey to the remote islands and villages of Papua New Guinea on the vessel the True North.

I was asked by owners Craig Howson and Mark Stothard to record the journey through the lens of my trusty 5D mk2 in a way that highlights the beauty of this spectacular country.

I was slightly nervous about PNG as you hear stories about it being an unsafe travel destination but this could not be further from the truth. It was so the opposite that I hope my short productions can dispel any doubts people have about this wonderful country.

Northstar Cruises have been building and fine tuning their Adventures in Paradise PNG tour for 5 years now and it's a credit to the crew of True North for it's well planned, interactive, and safe tour through one of the most remote places in the world.

Papua New Guinea is one of the most beautiful, clean and friendly places I have ever visited and am hoping to return one day to see more of this spectacular land.

It's a photographers paradise and as with the remote Kimberley of Western Australia one of the best travel experiences available.

For all of you who care this production was shot by me using the following equipment. Boy was I tired after I got back.

Two Canon 5D mk2's, Canon lenses 16/35mm, 24mm, 85mm, 18mm tiltshift, 400mm. Fostex FR2LE Field Recorder, Rode Mic's, Azden Wireless Mic's, Aqua Tech Water Housing, Various filters, Lee, Polarizers etc. Macbook Pro, MacPro, Final Cut Studio 7.

Awesome! Reminds me of some of the planet earth stuff. I lived in PNG for 12 years and your footage takes me back! Thanks!

    No problems Justin

Gee Michael, you're getting good at this stuff - well done (again) - The True North boys must be happy.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
I hope so Simon. They have got me booked on 4 more trips. It's bloody hard. Bloody hard indeed.

Good luck with your book mate. If you need a hand with anything let us know.

Michael I will gladly be your assistant on the next 4 trips!

Beautiful piece, Michael. That spot where the fresh-water river meets the sea was gorgeous. I really want to visit this place some day.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 1 year ago
    Cheers Tom. PNG is awesome.

  • 4Moorhens2 plus 2 years ago
Perfect! Impatiently waiting for the next instalment(s).

Did you send any stills back to the locals? After several trips to Africa and Asian I sent loads of still photos back to villagers and I think they really appreciated it.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Not yet but I'm hoping to send back a DVD as some of the villages had a TV and DVD player. I think they have one machine every 1000 square kilometers.

    Thanks for watching!!!!

Beautiful scenery and camerawork. This is a lovely glimpse into the unknown. Thank you for sharing this.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Thanks Lawrence. PNG is so untouched by tourism it is amazing. Put it in the bucket list mate.

the volcanic shots are just incredible. How long ago was the eruption?
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Hi Mark. The volcano erupted in 1994 I believe. It is a pretty stark reminder of what nature can do.

It was pretty awesome from the air and would be pretty cool to shoot from the ground.

Thanks for tuning in. I believe you have been talking to Mark Stothard also.
  • Mark Welker plus 2 years ago
Remarkable that the area has remained so preserved. Looks like it could have been yesterday.

Yeah I'm pulling together a case study on the great job you and North Star have been doing. I might hit you up for some stats at some point if that's ok with you.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Only too happy to help Mark

  • Jennifer Parker 2 years ago
    Breathtaking...yet again...both PNG films!
I'm curious to know how you handled your mics, equipment and shooting alone. No wonder it's hard!
Love the faces and incredible color. Thanks for sharing:).
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Cheers Jenn. Your my number 1 US fan. I was absolutely wrecked after this trip. With the malaria tablets and lack of sleep on the boat due to downloading and editing, it took me the good part of a week to recover.

Hey, it was worth every second.

  • Jean Marc ROCFORT plus 2 years ago
    Amazing images, volcano... !!
I love your glance on these people !!

    Just, I wonder :
Scene 2 : You fall in love with a Princess Papua ?
    Scene 3 : You're escape ? :))))
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Good ideas Jean for the sequel but the falling in love bit may upset the wife :-)

    Thanks for watching mate.

    Flawless!
Your hard work paid off man. I'd pay to see this in a cinema for sure so thank you for posting it here and allowing us to see PNG on these short winter days.

I mean this in a very good way but,
I take it you are inspired by Terrence Malick? In turn, you have inspired me.......big time!
    All the best
    Gavin

Yep I'm a big fan of TM and Hans Zimmers awesome scores. Thanks for the comments GO.

    Beautiful compositions - well done.

Have you tried ..and for all those reading this and have a canon 5d cineform.com/neoscene/ ..?
Converts the horrible canon 30p footage to 10-bit CineForm Intermediate (4:2:2) YES 4:2:2 mov or avi files!! and 29.9p & 23.9p ...... you can really grade it ! Its pretty cheap...

anyway - always enjoy watching your work Michael !
    Luke
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
    Cheers Luke

I haven't tried this but will have a look. I use Compressor to convert all my footage to Apple Pro Res 422 LT.

    Thanks for watching

    Mike
  • Luke Davies 2 years ago
Mike - can save the cineform files to a apple pro res codec, i think you find it just as quick as compressor - but your footage hugely improved in quality !
the rendered files have a high latitude range in colors for post grading - they are 10 bit 4:2:2 . cinform have free 7 day trial - love to know if it improves your footage !
    cheers luke
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
I'll do the test and let you know Luke.

    Cheers mate.

my company Michael - nativemultimedia.co.uk & my email address is on home page to contact me - REALLY love to know if the software makes a difference - I've been using a mate of mine canon's footage with impressive results...

Awesome footage of a very unique and fascinating location. The vivid colour and stunning clarity is just breathtaking. Michael, please advise how you achieve those super widescreen productions.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
    Hi Andrew

I use the widescreen matte in FCP to widescreen the footage. It's very easy to do and I love the results.

    Cheers

Well worth being tired (when returning) after capturing those scenes! Some of the best aqua-marine colors we'll ever see.
Terrific association with the music too!
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Yep the colors of the water is something else and well worth coming home tired. The water was an idyllic 29 degrees C. Hans Zimmer is the man.
  •
  • Oliver Wilkins plus 2 years ago
Such pristine beauty it's quite moving. Beautifully captured and the footage is super crisp. Did keep it in 30p?
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Thank Oliver. Yep all in 30fps.
  •
  • Muzz 2 years ago
Just beautifully crafted video and thoughtfully melded with the soundtrack - a real pleasure to watch. Even more impressive when you take into account the difficulties with your room mate! As always, looking forward to more.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
    Cheers Muzz

Rod was always in my shot, snored heaps, wore his undies around the boat, and constantly asking what are you doing there Fletch.

OK I lied. He was great company and a really funny f$#@er.

I recon you should join me on the next trip mate.

    Hey Mike
    Beautiful images, absolutely stunning.

Not sure how much colour grading you did in Final Cut, or whether it was just imaculate coming out of the camera, but the colours were just sensational.

    Beautiful
    Brent
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Hi Brent. Thanks for watching mate. There was some grading but the colors of PNG are so vivid and the tropical light seemed to polarize everything so I didn't have to do much.

I'll see you in Karijini next year.

    Cheers Mike

  • marzio mirabella plus 2 years ago
    Beautiful!
How did you stabilize the helicopter shooting?
Did you used any particular gear? or made it in post?
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Hi Marzio. Just used a monopod attached to the 5D with my rubber thong as a stabilizer. Fixed the rest up in FCP's smoothcam filter.

    Glad you liked it.

  • Andrew Howe plus 2 years ago
What an amazing place. The contrast between the super-real tropical colours and the almost monochrome volcanic area is breathtaking. I would offer to come and carry your bags if I thought I could lift them ;)
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
You'll be able to lift them mate. They only weigh about 30 kg in total. I'm off to dive with the great Whites in the Southern Ocean on Sunday. Still want to come :)

    Mike
  • Andrew Howe plus 2 years ago
Would that be the same Great Whites that is normally preceded by the phrase "man-eating"?
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
    Yep!!!!!!!
  •
  • Wayne Avanson plus 2 years ago
Brilliant again. some beautiful organic looking images in the mix there. Like it very much. Still hate you of course, but like the work very much.

    Avey
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Cheers Avey. I have been away shooting New Years on Sydney Harbour so I have been offline until now. I have just posted some footage from the 1Dmk4. Not brilliant but you cant nail it every time.

Hope you hate it. Tee Hee!!!!!

  • Dan Chung plus 2 years ago
Michael, just beautiful. Any more details on the 'Rubber thong' you used as a stabilizer? sounds curious. Again, great work!
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Hi Dan. The rubber thong is something you wear on your foot. A bit like a sandal. It made a good shock absorber. Thanks for tuning in.
  •
  • Make Some Tea plus 2 years ago
Truly breathtaking. The shots of man at 1:16 are spectacular. Did you use some pocket doll for it?Thank you sharing this beautiful video.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Nah no dolly. The movement of the water was pushing him in and out. Looked good though.

    Cheers Mike

  • Justin Ho 2 years ago
BEAUTIFUL footage! reminds me of planet earth a little. great choice of music and nice edit!
  •
  • Justin Ho 2 years ago
Is this from the 5D's stock audio or did you actually record sound separately?
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Thanks Justin. I recorded the sound straight from the camera. Only used stuf that wasn't wind effected. Faked the rest using Soundtrack Pro.

    Hey Jon.

Thanks for the rap mate and thanks for blogging it for me. Hows things for you. Are you keeping busy? I just got back from shooting with a 1Dmk4 on Sydney Harbour for New Years so I am just catching up. I have just posted some stuff if you have nothing better to do. Have you reached a Billion hits on you Aquarium vid yet? Fancy sharing some with me :)

Very beautiful Micheal. Watching your images just warmed me up on a cold Canadian winter's day. Happy New Year!
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
HNY to you too Rob. The water alone was 29 degrees C. There is a huge advantage to shooting in the Tropics. Beats snow and rain any day.

    Thanks for watching mate.

  • Peter Merten 2 years ago
love the helicopter shot. such a cool place. i'm saving for a 5d2 at the moment. how is it shooting video in the housing? is it tricky with the focus at all?
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Yep. Focus is very hard. Almost hit and miss. Thanks Pete.
  • Peter Merten 2 years ago
yeh thought it might be, should be a bit easier with a fisheye. one other question if you don't mind, what are you using in the helicopter to stabilise the camera, thanks
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Monopod pushed into the cushion of the choppers front seat. Smoothed out in FC Pro. No Gyro stabilizers here.
  •

  • Absolutely stunning . . . Nice work Michael. I hope to also someday get the 5D. I especially like the aerial at 2:44. Looking forward to seeing more from PNG. This has to be some of your best work.

    Awesome,

On your panning shots, I noticed quite a bit of stuttering, is the original footage like that?
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
No it's the play back that creates the problem.

Hey Mike, just commented on the Sydney vid, I'm doing a similar kind of film in the Bahamas and was just wondering what you filmed the aerial shots from and how you kept them smooth. They've got a plane for me to shoot from but I'm worried it's all just going to be shaky as hell. Thanks!
  •
  • Brent Jackson 2 years ago
Simply gorgeous. With the number of 5D mk2 units being sold as a result of these videos Canon should be paying you a commission!
