When designing the book for our Kickstarter-funded photographic essay on the Black Belt of Alabama, I first brush lettered the title, used a photo I took of Gainesville's "coffin shop", and placed a red Alabama silhouette in the layout on the computer. After much deliberation, I decided to remove the state from the layout in lieu of painting it there by hand instead. Thus, each of the 85 copies of the book feature a custom, hand-painted stencil of the state – in its official color, no less.
