For centuries, the port of Dubai on the Persian Gulf has been a hub for regional trade. Little known, outside of the current branding campaign of the contemporary Dubai trademark, is the Dubai Creek and its adjacent urban districts. The history of the Creek tells the Place narrative of the port. Over the past 30 years, the rapid growth and its western influence has greatly accelerated the cultural change that has occurred at the scene. There remains a quotidian experience along the creek that this film portrays. The transitory nature is revealed by the variety of cultures and their interactions off the tourist’s path. The depth of the cultural layering that remains is obscured by western conventions. The film renders through montage an experience of a place and its people that many inhabitants of Dubai proper have not encountered. There are economic forces at play such that this infrastructure and way of life may be lost. “The Floating Life of Dubai Creek” captures this cargo and sails along as if from, day to night; it seeks the eternal return of the Gulf’s waters. © metropole studio
