Testing out my newly purchased Canon HG-10. I documented a trip we took to Nikko Japan. The most random of footages was compiled into a short trailer with a cool song - at least it's somewhat entertaining this way, right?

Specs:
Camera: Canon HG10
Frame Mode: 24p; failed to realize the shutter speed is too low for JES Deinterlacer to pulldown frames so ended up in 29.97 (note to self: shoot on a higher shutter speed next time please)
Shutter Speed: 1/24
Color Correction: Magic Bullet Looks - Various
Song: Prodigy - "Firestarter"
*Note: This trailer is a ripoff of the trailer for "Blood, Bullets, and a Fistful of Cash"

Nikko and Japan in general is a great place to be a tourist. Was there in 1995 and remember it like it was yesterday :)

Yeah, Nikko is good. Wish there were more places open late or else we would have stayed an extra night instead of heading back to Tokyo.
Shrines and temples though . . . pretty cool.

When you are talking about your Frame Mode: would you have used 60i instead? Is that what you mean?
  • James 4 months ago
sorry, my mistake. I meant I should have shot on a higher shutter speed. 1/24 shutter speed has too much blur for JES to recognize the interlacing supposedly. I've shot i 1/48 and 1/60 in 24p mode and JES has no problem pulling down frames. still a bit concerned about the whole 24p ghosting issue though.

yeah, I don't think I am digging the 24p, going to try some 601 for awhile. I am trying to do slow mo videos and it just seems like to much blur.

    BTW: nice video

also, if i am not bugging ya, what settings do you use in JES to do the pulldown?
  • James 4 months ago
I've actually been looking into 24p slo mo as well. so far, shooting 60i then converting to 30p looks phenomenal; but, then converting to 24p makes the smooth movement a bit jittery . . . I'm on Mac - I used the compressor method (http://www.hv20.com/showthread.php?t=7759&page=2 close to the bottom of the page)
    have you had any luck?
for the jes deinterlacer I used all the defaults for the inverse telecine (making sure detect cadence breaks is checked as well as outputting to 23.976 frames) . . . seems to work alright - have you tried it yourself?
  • Courtney Seckner 4 months ago
yeah haven't had that much luck with JES, I think I may try the compressor way. The hunt continues

Great job! Was hoping it was Vegas so I could add it to the Sony Vegas Channel!!! And I guess it looked similar to me since you use Magic Bullet also. Looks great.
