Evan Osnos delivers the 2013 Joe Alex Morris Jr. Memorial Lecture at the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard on November 14, 2013. Osnos reported from China from 2005 to 2013, first as the Beijing bureau chief for the Chicago Tribune and then as China correspondent for The New Yorker, starting in 2008. During his lecture, he talked about the excitement of covering one of the biggest stories in the world, but also the difficulties of reporting in a country where the government often seeks to silence your work. He also explained the difficulties of balancing stories about human rights and dissidents with stories about ordinary life in a country of more that a billion people.
