People think that fishermen cannot save, because of their low literacy levels that they cannot find a way out of poverty. For many years the people of Munnakkaraya were trapped in a vicious cycle of poverty, exploited by the traders and cornered by the rest of Negombo. Munnakkaraya is an islet 30 kms North of Colombo the bustling capital of Sri Lanka. They were poor and marginalized. They lacked housing, proper sanitation, education and health care. They lacked banking services – savings and credit. Through Stromme Foundation initiated Help for Self-help project in 1985 the village started to change. The people were taught to save what they earned, pool their savings and make it available for the villagers to borrow and improve their circumstances. Empowered women led the project over these 27 years supporting their husbands and uplifting their lives. This is their story of great transformation – Beyond the Ocean.
