Although women make up nearly half of all enrollees in medical school, and about 35 percent of practitioners in specialties, fewer than 10 percent of orthopedic surgeons are female. The engineering field shows similar disparities. The Perry Initiative, a national nonprofit organization, works to correct these imbalances through day-long workshops designed to give high school and undergraduate college students an idea of what it's like to be a surgeon or engineer. Thanks to funding from UNM Department of Orthopaedics Chair Dr. Robert Schenck, UNM orthopedic surgeons and medical students gave 40 young women a hands-on taste of their profession, in hopes that some of these students might someday join their ranks.
