21. Canon 5D Mark II Slow Motion + Jaws ( Peahi ) 12-7-09
2 years ago
brought to you by : redheadwindscreens.com
Custom windscreens for your Zoom H4n, Tascam, Sony, Olympus, Yamaha, Korg, Edirol, and Alesis digital handheld audio recorders.

12-23-09 update, cool, I've been trying to identify any of these big wave riders and just got the following email from Delphine Lamour the communications manager at Oxbow surf wear.

Hello Kalani,

In this video you have Oxbow team riders Laird Hamilton, Kai Lenny and Jason Polakow.

Amazing!

Kind regards,

Delphine LAMOUR

12-18-09 Thank you all for the amazing emails with your Maui memories and kind comments !, that's the stuff that warms my soul !

I love it if you "like" it, please share me if you love me.

Aloha all, just wanted to post a little footage from Jaws today...These waves are insanely huge and I have so much respect for the surfers that have the guts to do this as well as the jet ski operators that are tremendously talented in their own right, many of them big wave riders as well..

Anyhow, I live a couple of miles from Jaws on W.Kuiaha in a little town called Haiku. At night I can hear these monsters breaking, they sound like thunder...

Tech :
Canon 5D Mark II
Canon 70-300 USM @ 300mm
Zoom H4n & Redhead windscreen for faint ocean sounds
Premiere CS4

hope you all enjoy this little teaser.. there's more to come later, it's still going off !, and tomorrow is supposed to be huge as well.. Going to try to get the morning light..

One of the Jaws pioneers is Laird Hamilton. His wife Gabrielle Reece had this to say on his blog today..

"12-7-09 Swell Update from Laird

Gabby:
12-7-09
3:50 Hawaii Time

I just spoke to Laird around 3pm Hawaii time (5pm PST) from Maui. He said they had a good morning and that his board and body were feeling good. They went out fairly early, and it had not gotten too crowded yet. The boys (Dave Kalama, Terry Chun, Derrick Doerner and others) came in for gas fuel and food fuel for lunch. By then a front had come in and “chop sueyed” the waves. Laird then proceeded to watch some of the action from the cliff side. He said a lot of skis went up on to the rocks along with some boards. He felt like there may have been several new comers who were having to work it all out.

I’m on Kauai and Kings reef began to break ever so slightly. The ocean floor by this reef is so deep that you don’t even see Kings unless it’s starting to be Hawaiian 25 ft (that’s double in the front).

The boys are going to sit tight on Maui and then make their plan for tomorrow. As most of you know the swell hits Kauai first, then Oahu (which is having a bit of rain and some major water surging), Maui and so on. Once they get a beat on the conditions (wind, swell) they will most likely decide to continue to stay on Maui and surf Peah’i (aka Jaws) tomorrow. If I hear anything of interest I will let you all know."

Please copy/paste the following and share the Jaws love with your friends and family : )

I was trying to send you all some media from the cliff side but my iPhone was as good as useless deep in Haiku's dormant pineapple fields on the side of a cliff ! I'll try to post some pics later of the ridiculous position I was in while capturing this.. All the pro shooters stay up top with their 100000000mm lenses so I decided to get as low on the cliff as humanly possible without getting swept away. I'm about 20' above sea level and constantly wiping my polarized filter clean due to the heavy salty mist that is covering you at all times.. : )

    ...oh ...my ...GOD!!!
    D U D E ! ! ! ? ? ?

I'm so jealous. Those are truly epic waves, and I can't wait to see what you do with your footage. It's gonna be mind-blowing I'm sure.

Thanks for sharing what you got so far... waiting on pins and needles now...
  • iamkalaniprince plus 2 years ago
It's ridiculous out there really.. So majestically beautiful in real life !, I sometimes find myself having trouble focusing on actually shooting..

    Thanks for the aloha Jay.
PS: did you ever sell your XL2 and get a MKII ? hope so.. We've got 24p as well as (60p coming I think..)
  • Jay Johnson 2 years ago
Well be careful on those cliffs, Brah! You should get a climbing harness and have someone belay you down on a rope. Then you could tie-off the camera to your harness. No more worries about falling in!

Actually, the stars aligned and I did manage to sell the old XL2... and there was MUCH rejoicing! But I got the 7D instead of the 5D for now. I'm still practicing/learning with it and I really love it so far. Haven't managed to shoot anything Vimeo-worthy yet, but as soon as I do I'll be sure to get it uploaded that day!

I just got the kit lens (28-135mm f/3.5-5.6) with it for $200 more, but I'm going to eventually start buying some good glass for it. I tested out the new Zeiss ZE lenses at an expo on my 7D and WOW, what a difference.
  • iamkalaniprince plus 2 years ago
    oooohhh Zeiss... I likey..
  •
  • Brian Scott plus 2 years ago
    Excellent footage my friend!
the story of how you got the footage is even better!
imagine how that's going to look once we get that firmware update!!!! Wahooooo!
I'd love to shoot with you sometime (if and when I make over to hawaii to live, come spring) esp one of those high altitude time lapse moments!
Good work Kalani - keep it coming!
  • iamkalaniprince plus 2 years ago
Anytime Mr. Scott ! Headed to Maui ?? I've yet to get my 360deg mountain top 10,000 ft timelapse that I've been dreaming of.. Would love to have a wingman for sure !

    Keep me posted !

Wow are these guys brave or stupid? :) They are AWESOME huge waves. And one right after the other. I remember getting dunked by a huge wave when I was like 10 (by huge, maybe it was like 2 foot ). And then struggling to breathe before the next wave hits. I can't imagine what this would feel like falling off. I can hardly breathe watching it. Great footage. Looking forward to seeing the rest.
  • iamkalaniprince plus 2 years ago
Definitely brave and smart.. they have a pretty solid operation with the jet skis and strong comradery with everyone out there, the ski's have everyone's backs for the most part..
Back in the day it wasn't uncommon to see these guys riding with oxegen tanks strapped to their backs.. Nowaday's they are even more daring... I haven't gone through all of my footage up close and personal but I think I may have a couple of shots of what I thought was Laird Hamilton with a stand up paddle board, no straps.. Always the innovator !
  •
  • indyflix 2 years ago
Thank you so much for sharing this!!! That guy surfing backside didn't even penetrate the water when he wiped out, he just skidded along like it was the floor... scary fast!!! MORE MORE MORE PLEASE!! Aloha nui loa!!
  • iamkalaniprince plus 2 years ago
Yuppers. These monsters are rolling in at 20mph +, the surfers that can keep their footing, even with straps are hitting 35+ mph.. In real time he skipped for a nano second then vanished.. 200 yards later, he's picked up only to head out for another set !
  •
  • Austin Vavrovics 2 years ago
I witnessed the Jaws waves! When I was 10 I went on vacation and saw people getting destroyed by waves that seemed even larger at my age. I have been hit by a 10ft wave and it hurts, I cant even imagine that
  • iamkalaniprince plus 2 years ago
I love your choice of words.. haha, "saw people getting destroyed"... priceless !.. Really, that is EXACTLY what is happening at Jaws.. It's absolute insanity.. You see someone fall on one of these and literally come up 200 yards away without being able to come up for air.. The jet ski's don't even attempt to look for them at the crash site.. I wish I would have gotten footage of a couple of the ski's that got trapped inside and eventually ended up being destroyed on the rocks.. These monsters are seriously destructive.. Hope all is well Ausitn, I really enjoy your posts.. very down-to-earth ! Aloha-

Awesome video - truelly amazing... and the slow motion is perfect - just wondering how you might have achieved this in Prem CS4 .... so many tips on FCP online but great to see another 5d2 user getting some great results with Premiere
  • iamkalaniprince plus 2 years ago
it's funny and I don't know why this happens but I just used Premiers built-in "speed/duration" function. But had to find the sweet spot.. I think for this it was 64.7%... I have no idea why this particular percentage rendered a rather smooth result but I'm not going to complain.. 64.6 would come out with tiny micro stutters as would 64.8 or whatever.. Other video's that I've tested the slomo worked better at say 70.2 or 70.1 ?... If anyone could shed some light on why this little sweet spot works, I'd greatly appreciate it : ).. I found the 64.7 in this vid to work better than twixtor in AE.

That last wave I was acctually saying holy shit out loud, is laird hamilton in there? which guy was he!
  • iamkalaniprince plus 2 years ago
Haha, I love those moments where you actually say it out loud it ! I know he was out but even when I zoomed in It was hard for me to identify people.. If anyone spots someone they know, please let me know so I can give them credit..
I know he was out the next day on a friggin paddle board crazy crazy man : )..
I remember when he lived on my street as a kid, he was just beginning to hit it big and was just the coolest guy. We were little skaters at the time and he's pay us in stickers to wash his truck which we thought was the coolest.. ahhh, fun memories..
  • Sean Hind 2 years ago
Wow dude that is abosolutely nuts! man I have a book of his and he seems super chill I love some of his "philosophy". Anyways sick video dude and im stoked for you that you get to document your child hood star

  • iamkalaniprince plus 2 years ago
Aloha, I am currently uploading a new version as vimeo sent me an email saying my video was in violation of site policy. I had to remove the "brought to you by RedHead Windscreens" title card that comes up before the clip plays. I'm happy to remove it as I hadn't actually read the sites policy. My bad, please hang in there as the new version is uploading as we speak. If you want, send me an email info@redheadwindscreens.com and I'll let you know the min it's back. Love and aloha, Kalani-

    Love the footage kalani.

For anyone interested in big wave surfing you should definitely check out "Riding Giants". The bulk of it is about Hawaii, including Jaws and Laird, as well as other big wave spots and surfers. Really well done. I think it opened Sundance several years back.

It's really awesome to be there in person, humbling, exciting and terrifying all at the same time.. The crowd that gathers there really emanates a strong sense of community as everyone is rooting for these skilled surfers ! It's a pretty awesome experience and not the last that we will see this winter season on Maui. I highly recommend coming to Maui during the winter months.. Just don't forget to send me a PM !

  • iamkalaniprince plus 2 years ago
200th shutter and playing with the speed in Premiere rendered pretty good results. ie: 50% was choppy and 50.4 or 51.7 would be fine.. Weird but effective. Play with it and have fun. Even 30p can give you great results !

WOW, what a shot. Five surfers in only one scene. You are a lucky guy. Or is that normal in Hawaii? I've been there in 2005 on a bus tripp with my father. But it was almost cloudy. And there was no 5D Mk II ;-). Hope to see more HD-Videos from you. Greetings from Germany

Loved the footage. I thought it looked abit grainy to me. I have seen alot sharper from this camera. Could it be the mist in the air?
  • iamkalaniprince plus 2 years ago
It's me. I'm a grain junkie. I add grain, dust, and scratches to almost all my video's. I just like it I guess.
