The proof that Telekom subsidiaries can play nicely together!
How can an innovation and design lab contribute to a well-established party series? With interactive audio-visual installations based on a live social media feed and motion tracking.
In 2013 the graphical design identity of the EB series were based on triangles and characters built from simple, yet colourful geometric shapes. They really grabbed our attention but just didn’t feel alive to us, so we decided to animate them and make them into interactive installations!
For the Budapest blast, we transformed its mascot, which was a funky raccoon, into a live 3D character. He appeared on a screen, mirrored facial gestures and reacted to the users’ mouth movement with speech!
After the success of the Budapest event we decided to create something bigger and more engaging for the Viennese electronic music lovers! Instabeats used a live Instagram feed with the #ebfest13 hashtag and turned it into an interactive visual soundscape.
How does it work? A playable grid is generated from the tagged photos and when a new picture is uploaded the grid changes correspondingly. A Kinect camera scans the people standing in front of the wall projection and the users can highlight points on the grid with their joints. These points are played as musical notes, which are calculated from the colour of the current segment. The drum sequence is generated from their posture. Every picture produces a new sound, a new mood. As a result people can make music and enjoy memories together.
