White on White is film inspired by a failed 1920s collaboration between German filmmaker Hans Richter and Russian Suprematist painter Kasimir Malevich. In Sussman’s work, a group of artists escape from a closed movie set and attempt to gain access to the Baikonur Cosmodrome. There, they switch places with a group of scientists studying the element lithium, and are themselves the subjects of another documentary. Concerned with issues of surveillance – comprised of minute gestures within lush visual landscapes – White On White is also inspired by the concept and history of space travel and the primacy of science over art. The project will evolve over a series of improvisations by Eve Sussman's collaborative ensemble, the Rufus Corporation.
