Miami Viceroy .1
The AXA Art Collectors Lounge at Art Basel Miami Beach.
AXA Art, the worlds leading fine art insurance specialist and Cranbrook Academy of Art engaged in a creative collaboration for Art Basel Miami Beach 2009. AXA Art commissioned the prestigious art academy to conceptualize, design and create a 21st Century experiential environment to be installed in the AXA Art lounge at Art Basel Miami Beach 2009.
The lounge was designed and fabricated by Elliott Earls, Beverly Fishman, Heather McGill and William Massie.
The name is pronounced "Miami viceroy dot one." The name is a pun that refers to the famous Miami Vice interiors inspired by the Memphis design movement. It also refers to the multiple definitions of the term "Viceroy." The primary definition is a ruler exercising authority in a colony on behalf of a sovereign. The secondary definition refers to a migratory orange and black butterfly that closely resembles the Monarch. ".1" is a reference to the digital fabrication techniques employed in it's design and fabrication.
At the close of Art Basel Miami Beach 2009, "Miami Viceroy .1" was generously donated to the Miami Art Museum by AXA Art Insurance Corporation.
