Wonderful Counselor
CrossRoads Nazarene Church
Advent Series Part 1

Scripture Theme: Isaiah 9: 6 -7 NIV
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Wonderful Counselor comes from two Hebrew words. The first (Wonderful) means “beyond understanding.” It means, “too wonderful for words.” They didn’t have the vocabulary to describe Him. He used a word that said there are no words good enough, descriptive enough to tell you how amazing He is. The second word (counselor) means to advise, consult or guide. It came to be known as “to call beside” or someone who stands beside someone…someone who stands by and exhorts and encourages – even comforts another.

"For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us."
in our time of need.
Hebrews 4:15-16

If we are going to receive Help & Healing from the Wonderful Counselor, we must…

1. Be Brutally Honest.

Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know
my anxious thoughts. Psalm 139:23

We must be honest with God. That much is certain, but… we must be
• Honest with yourself…
• Honest with those in your life who you are close to – those whom you are in community with…

2. LISTEN Carefully to the Counselor.

Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!” Mark 9:7

3. Do What the Counselor TELLS You to Do.
Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. Matt. 7:24

“I will praise the LORD, who counsels me…” Psalm 16:7a

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you. Psalm 32:8
