Hey philip, Im a complete beginner to making films, i have a little bit of experience in photography but not much. I've always had a huge passion for film!! I've decided that im going to start filming my own stuff, and hopefully try film school. Im wondering what your suggestion would be for a good dslr or camcorder to get me started?? Thanks

    7d and a 50mm lens, you can't beat it
  • Paul Voden Films plus 2 months ago
Why would you suggest a 7D over something like a 60D which has better audio controls, an articulating screen and is a better price point for a beginner?
  • Steven M. Bumgardner 2 months ago
I think he suggested it because when the comment was made two years ago, the 60D didn't exist.
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 months ago
    correct!! :)
  • Nelson Reyes 2 months ago
    60d?, nooooo, 600D ist better,
  • Mohit Deshpande 2 months ago
I don't get what the difference between 60D and 600D is? Both have the same tech specs. Anyone care to explain?
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 months ago
both are great...use either one to make great pictures as the image out of them is the same. If you have the money the 60d offers better quality and easier use and higher end photographic features.
  • Paul Voden Films plus 1 month ago
Wewps! Sorry 'bout that. I'm too young to not know what year it is. lol
  • DSLR Films Galore 1 month ago
Hey Michael, just remember the dslr is the most important thing cuz that's what is at the heart of the revolution. THe sublime imagery is about your ability to acquire the camera. Super importnant! Also don't ever believe any of those old industry "pros" or film school people when they tell you the sound is "important." Oh yeah like an professional imaging device like the dslr needs sound. You don't even see sound. Duh! The days of "pro camcoders" are done, too. Stay away from them. They offer no abilities that you'll need to make you dslr film with 501.8 and zoom and no "experience," just talent. Like me!

Since Phil was gracious enough to invite me to the thing with Fricke, I'm going to make a special cut for the occasion! So stoked. Thanks again, Phil.

Hey Philip - wonderful. This one's working on all cylinders. Not only beautifully shot - perfectly composed - but amazingly constructed. Great to see the timelapse(s) The first starry night. - the mist on the pond, the pastoral landscape. I hope one day we get to work together!

great stuff phil. loved the music pump as the sun rose over the mountains! glidetrack stuff super smooth... do they make a slightly longer track?

You should get the Shooter HD. It's perfect for you and then length is spot on for tripods.

I have lived/worked 10 mins from Skywalker Ranch all my life, ridden my motorcycle past it countless times, but it has always remained hidden from the public and I never knew what it looked like until now. I never thought I would ever get the opportunity to see it but you've given me that opportunity and I can die peacefully now. Great work and congratulations!

Canon should really start paying you a lot of money. You do more for marketing their cameras than they ever could. Same with sony... you're the reason i got really pumped about buying EX1's. Well done sir!

    Beautiful work as always Philip!

I would love to see an annotated version denoting which shots were 7D vs 5DMKII, along with lens information. Could be quite educational for the budding cinematographers amongst us. Also, I noted you mentioned using the 7D for some of the timelapse sequences. Which ones, especially the shot looking up at the stars? Simply incredible.

As always, I look forward to each and every new blog and video post!
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
all the first chunk was 5dmkii, first night timelapse was 5d, second 7d, most of fog was 5d, big timelapse of sunrise was 7d and most of following shots were 7d too.

Fantastic Philip, you must have pulled some serious all nighters to get this shot and edited so quicky. Money shot is defo the stars twirling over the ranch. If you are looking for something to stop your camera icing over try this: astrozap.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=222 we use them for astrophotography
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
Thanks for tip. I need something like that!

the night timelapses were longest. took about 5 hours each. editing was a breeze and i knew my stuff well and knew what i wanted!

Congratulations with your #100 VIMEO milestone!
So nice of you to share your dreams & knowledge and see a successtory for us all. Always admired the gifted couple Lucas and Steven Spielberg who also started playing around with his fathers old 8mm cinefilm/movie camera, but in our videographers world you already are the GREAT DSLR GURU. Many of us graphers spent more hours on your movies and blogs as on those famous guys. Go on and on please! (BTW new glide position: I used the glidetrack from my shoulder down to subjects, works also great!)

WOW! This looks really nice. So all those wide and establishing shots held well on a 40 feet screen? Were those shots 5D or 7D? I don't know how you do it. My 7D falls apart on shots like that even on my 24" screen. How do you do it? I have great glass so it can't be the glass. What was your sharpness setting for those shots?
    Thanks.
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
sharpness was totally off! the only was to shoot with these cams!

So what about size? Did you use only 1080? The only thing that maybe looked like 720 60 was some of the slider shots. If not, kudos on the smooth movement....

    Everything was 1080p
