2013 was going to be a promising year. With flights booked to New Zealand for our year away, I decided to kick start the first weekend of January '13 with an all day 8 hour epic ride In the Highlands with Mr McNulty. Sadly this was also to be my last ride for 3 months as I suffered afterwards with a severe case of sciatica that saw me laid up in bed for a week and a very long recovery. With a terrible winter in Scotland I had little else to do than rebuild my Beloved Curtis Super X as a project. Cheers for the great respray Gary...

I prayed I could ride my bike in time to go to NZ, with little else to do but rest. The came the dreaded 24 hour flight. At least I had a whole row on the plane to spread out. My spirits were lifted arriving into wellington, flying over Queen Charlotte Sound, an eye dropping mix of mountains and water, I was giddy as a school boy.

Luckily for me the only Kiwi I knew at the time was Dave Norris, a local trail builder and all round "Good **** " as they say in New Zealand. Within in a couple of hours of landing Dave took me up the local hills behind his house in Waterloo. As my 3rd ride of the year I was very tentative but could not help but have the biggest grin on my face as we descended at sunset. What a cracking time I'm gonna have here, I was thinking to myself.

With just a week to go until Jen started work in Nelson we went on a wee tiki tour to Martinborough. Some easy pedaling, washing down with fine wine before we got the ferry to the South Island..
