This video was taken at the Munich Christkindelmarkt on Dec 8, 2013. The Krampus tradition is from the Bavarian area of Germany. In the tradition, St Nikolaus is accompanied by Krampus (hairy, horned creatures), Perchten (imps) and Hexen (witches). While St Nikolaus is busy rewarding the children who have been good, the Krampus, etc., are punishing the bad children, usually by swatting them with switches. In the tradition, they also have the option of taking away exceptionally bad children and eating them. The Krampus run was forbidden for much of the 20th century, and has been revived only fairly recently. My wife was grabbed by three different Krampus, but the worst they did to her was muss her hair. I got my ankles swatted once.
