Morogoro is a city of about 400,000 people, though a proper census has not been recorded for years. Morogoro is 2 hours west of Dar es Salaam. The Uluguru Mountains form a beautiful backdrop that can be seen from anywhere in the city. Morogoro is hot and humid and has municipal infrastructure. Though the population is rather large, there are only a few square blocks of paved roads, many roads are made of dirt. There are many restaurants serving delicious Tanzanian food, mainly rice and curried or barbequed meat. Fruit such as mango and banana are very common and when in season hundreds of giant 50 foot mango trees feed many people in the city. Corn is also a very common crop, and can be bought on almost every street corner.

In Morogoro, GSE directors Rogers Sabugo and Godfrey Deogratius from the Sokoine University of Agriculture coordinate students from four different secondary schools. Students have formed a Global Student Embassy clubs at each of the 4 high schools. Stduents meet once a week to discuss relevant issues in the Morogoro community and to participate in GSE workshops. Students and directors are planning the development of the Morogoro Youth Training Center (MYTC). Students in California and in Tanzania are working to fundraise for this project. In January 2010 we will be bringing our two directors from Morogoro to California. In the summer of 2010, students from California will travel to Morogoro and participate in workshops, help with the founding of the MYTC and collaborate on a community development project.
