A video of a recent surf trip to Scotland. We got to surf awesome waves and walk along the Scottish North Coast, which is a seriously beautiful place. This was a great trip!!

Edit: So I have had some really good feedback on this vid, but also some very angry and also some concerned and constructive feedback. It may be hard to believe for some, but my intentions for the video really were good. (At the time of writing the replacement video is playing - in some rare cases a cached version of the old one might play for those who have already watched it, but I can't control that...)

It seems I may have missed the mark somewhat and was possibly a little naive about my voice over on the video. I have taken out most of it to exclude spot names and some other stuff I mentioned and replaced the video here with the new one. That means that any site with the video embedded will be showing the new one too.

I realise that for some it may seem to be too little too late, but I do apoligise to anyone that was offended and, for lack of a better phrase, pissed off by the voice over.

This was our first video and we are learning as we go so a sincere apology to the local surfers in the area and I hope you can believe that no harm was intended and this really was a case of believing I wasn't giving any locations away.

The video is a little weird without a large chunk of the voice over and when I get some time I will do a new one that hopefully appeals to everyone.

Very well done indeed, both you you. I've never surfed but used to canoe rivers and the Atlantic and Irish sea in Ireland. Can't imagine canoeing waves as big as these however.

Those waves are very impressive looking. Well shot sir.

    Thanks Paul!
We are super keen to surf the West Coast of Ireland too! I've always wanted to go to Ireland - it's my motherland :)

Amazing dude, when did you go ? I Went There in July 2007, and the bigger wave we saw was half a feet in Brim Ness.

I don't recomend you the video of the trip, but I recomend you the video of one of my trips to Ireland ;)

You will love Ireland, is a little more crowded than Scotland, but there are lots of good waves, and sometimes you would like not being alone there ;)

    Thanks!
We were there at the beginning of November this year. I hear it's really small in summer, but the days are really long. It would be nice to have long days and big swell! :)
Ireland looks great (I watched your video) and we really want to go there! There is a spot called Riley's that I really want to surf...

Really long days, surfable from 4am to 11pm, if there are waves.
How long where the days at the beginning of november ?

Riley's ? Yo like really sick spots.
I have only seen it in videos, but it's amazing. I'm keen to see the video of your surftrip in the emmerald island ...
  • Shane Rielly plus 2 years ago
Wow, that is long. We had 7 to 8 hours of daylight when we were there. Dark by 4pm! It rained a lot too, but well worth it.
Yeah, I've also only seen Riley's on video. If I do get to go there will definitely be a video of the trip!

Nice one Shane glad you guys got a good one!!! Number 10's looks pretty sick. Rupert willaims a bodyboarder from the north east, first surfed and named that spot about a year ago its good to see the name has stuck.
Glad to see you guys in there giving it a bash along with rich s, not sure about the tow ins though:( Some filthy kegs nice one fellas!! Good to see you hitting the end section at baggies also :)
  • Shane Rielly plus 2 years ago
    Thanks man!!
I could spend a few months up there exploring and I'd be a happy man! :)
I'd love to surf baggies again a few more times and get to know it a little better...
Number 10's was awesome - I wish I could surf it like that again. I like to think I would charge harder than I did... :)

That first spot is like a bigger version of kennaways, it breaks almost identical.
  • Shane Rielly plus 2 years ago
That spot was better than Kways because there is no ugly end-section and it runs for longer than Kways, but the water was a lot colder! :) I could definitely ride better at Kways though because I know it quite intimately :)

Hey thanks for the comment! We are hopefully going to be in Brazil near the end of the year...

Cool! We have excellent beach breaks and some point breaks too, depends on when you come, I live in Rio de Janeiro, where we have itacoatiara ... a great beach break, but in the north of Brazil, we have a island called Fernando de Noronha, one of the most beautiful places in the world, pretty perfect waves too, I think you'll like, we will maintain contact, a hug

Thanks Bogdan! Hopefully we can make it to Portugal sometime - I have a friend who lives in Porto. My wife can speak a little bit of Portuguese so it would be very good practice for her to visit there :)

“I live in a small town in South Africa”

    Why didn’t you name it?

    Don’t you want us there?

Would your friends at your home break get a bit upset if we came with all our friends and invited the world there too?

Is it yours and you’re a bit protective of it?

Do you like to keep it as it is?

Are you quite happy with respectful visitors who enjoy the hospitality and then keep their stories to their friends?

Would you be upset if somebody turned up and “sold” your break to make their name as a budding film-maker?

    I wonder………

Thankfully our weather is so awful, all you’ll do it bring a lot of people a long way to spend lots of money getting cold and windblown. Fine for the local economy, but I’d be upset if I saved for a year and met our usual weather. Some of those who come will get some nice waves, but the vast majority will get skunked.

Why do you think most Scottish surfers go south to tropical areas for their big surf trips? It’s not because the waves are better, it’s because we won’t spend hundreds and hundreds of pounds for two weeks of sitting in a cold van in the rain, by a cold road to get two onshore surfs when it’s dark for 17 hours a day. We’ve all done it and we’re not stupid or rich enough to do it again.

Ireland is the same. Great on a good day, but you might need to wait a month for it.

Our weather might be rubbish, but sometimes it’s the best thing that ever happens to us. If it was good, the place would be mobbed, but it’s a complete gamble and you’re far more likely to get good surf and nice conditions for a lot less cash elsewhere. While I’m on the subject, if you could go out without gloves, it wasn’t winter.

You were lucky and got some nice waves and OK weather, but I’d think carefully about what your enthusiasm has led you to do.

I’d very, very, very quickly remove your voiceover and edit some of the film or you’ll really upset the very people who welcomed you and treated you with respect and courtesy.

    You should show them some.

    aw

Great work Shane. My bro sent me this link today. We're heading to the Isle of Skye this summer. I live in South Florida, there was a manatee in the line-up today! Wish I could have filmed that.
  • Shane Rielly plus 2 years ago
A good friend of mine went to Skye an a photography mission and says that is seriously beautiful there! His photos look amazing.
Wow, manatees are cool man, that must be have been pretty cool!

Also, I see you gotta lot of flack for this. I have to admit that was my first reaction but you seem like a genuine dude, and sounds like you have learned a lot from this experience, so keep up the good work.

Yeah, live and learn I guess... :)

I watched this video and it was great... especially in HD. But it was disappointing with the cut-outs of the break's name. I don't understand why the locals don't want their break known to the world. It's not very likely that people will be making world trips to Scotland for that break and clogging it up. But if I were in the area I would appreciate to know of any good spots. We are a small community of wave riders in this world and we must help each other out.
