This is my one night shoot at Singapore Turf club using a pre-production Canon Eos1DmkIV loaned by Canon Singapore. It was all shot at 720p/60 and then slowed to 23.98 fps using Cinema tools. Footage is Ungraded. Edited in Final Cut Pro

Thanks to Canon Singapore, Cathay Photo and Yeo Wee Han for all their help.

Haha, you better be careful. You're going to go from being a newspaper man to a Hollywood cinematographer before you know it!

Lovely edit and humanistic storytelling ..

Too bad about the camera's 720p mode, though, this is a hellish example of aliasing

    Great camara!!

The last footage I see a reflection (or not), it is in de middle on top. Pheraps it is a phenomen ghost same 7D.

it's just a reflection of the lights on a lens element or filter.

This is a truly amazing piece of footage shot. The rack focusing is clean and precise. The tonal range is incredible. The blacks look pure. There was some anti-aliasing that I caught but this was a truly enjoyable piece to watch.

Great work Dan! Wonderfully shot and edited. However the aliasing is really appalling at 00:12 and 00:30. Definitely the real weak spot of the Video DSLRS. Its a pity the gear let you down!
  • A Rigged Production plus 2 years ago
I really don't think it's a problem or issue. Only the technically pedantic worry about such things and if you were using this camera as a tool to tell a story people shouldn't be focusing on the framing and other technical aspects of it anyway (as long as it's not intolerably atrocious)
  • Neustock Media 2 years ago
Thanks for the reply! However if we were not "technically pedantic" why not just shoot everything via camera phone or web cam? These cameras have faults that distract from the fantastic quality they produce and in my opinion would be noticed by the layman as well as the professional. Also higher end clients will not accept footage with these kind of issues, at least not as obvious as they are here. I am not a pixel peeper at all just pointing out a very obvious problem.
  • A Rigged Production plus 2 years ago
To be absolutely honest, I didn't notice them first time around until I read your comment and then re-watched the video, so I'd say that's substantial evidence for these issues to be quite simply, nothing to worry about.

It's only a problem if you make it one.
  • Seiishu 2 years ago
Exactly my point too. People tend to search (even when there is nothing to be found) for some things that most of other people wouldn't even be bugged by at all. Results SLR cameras are giving are amazing, prices are great (well, at least comparing to other pro-consumer/pro cameras). Wanna spend all your money on RED? You're welcome.
  • ABOYfilms pro 2 years ago
My untrained eye didn't notice it until re-watching those sections 2-3 times :{!
  • A Rigged Production plus 2 years ago
    Point in focus.

I agree with you Sasha wholeheartedly, they're fantastic. Sure there are going to be a few discrepancies here or there and the histograms might look off and prove another couple faults, but at the end of the day when you not only compare the price point to other cameras, but are getting the same if not better looking effect from said cameras, what's there to worry about?

These days I feel film makers, at least indie film makers, get horribly caught up in the details. They sit around for weeks umming and arrghing about whether or not they should "Buy this camera over this one" or "Use this piece of equipment over this" or what have you and end up spending most of their time sitting around, bored, waiting.

Don't get me wrong, I feel there is a place for being technically specific and having a keen eye for details of these sorts, but, if it's going to stop you filming, going to hold you up, going to make you want to tear your hair out because you're sitting around waiting for this or that then really, I don't think it's particularly worth it.

In my opinion, you're much better off (and I, personally, would prefer you) to just get out there and shoot and get it done and have fun whilst doing so (most important!) and not let yourself be immobilised in this way :).

    Cheers,

    Rig ;D

Nothing to add, this is totally true. OK, maybe just one thing to add... even after hours and hours, days and days, months and months of time spent trying to decide which one has the least amount of problems, I am assuring you they will not find anything that would satisfy them. Even when they buy most expensive and most technically advanced piece of technology, they will keep searching for those problems (minor ones this way or another)... it's because it's in their blood and they will always keep doing it. In the mean time, people like you and me can spend time enjoying our beloved cameras, spending time developing ideas, be creative. If your video work is so good, people will recognize it sooner or later. If there is some kind of technical issue that's caused by your equipment, those who understand these things will easily recognize it and they will never blame you for this problem. The point is, even if there is perfect camera out there... it will be useless in the hands of someone who has no clue how to use it.

That being said, I love every single second I am spending with 7D, even though I can't produce any professional looking video. I am enjoying it's capabilities to it's fullest. Having antialiasing problems or not, I don't care, it is still at least 300 times better than any other expensive dedicated camcorder I had in the past. Being able to swap lenses at any moment I need it, is something indescribable. Having full control of the DOF at any given moment - precious.
  • The first time i watched this i noticed a "strange thing" (aliasing) on 00:12 but i keep watching the video and forget the issue.

I think that dslrs are amazing low cost tools, tools to reach to the people who expects good visual quality (that's why you don't film in cellphones or webcams) if the only thing you want to show is the story go ahead and make it with whatever you have in hand.

at the same time is important to know this issues because they will help you to choose which cam or equipment you need to buy in order to create a visual work (or try to fix them using certaing technique).

See a mistake, error, etc is one thing BUT to be always focusing on that could dry the imagination or creation.

i don't worry that much because i know that in few years this problem will be fix, technology moves on. I still want a dsrl cam.

    Good work, btw.

  • Sanjin Jukic pro 2 years ago
For sure very impressive but aliasing will still remain as one of main backwards of all Canon's HD DSLRs.

Also it was shot in "not so" low light conditions and I'm sure 7D could handle it pretty good or almost similar at the same place (excellent lighted stadium) @ range from ISO 1200-1600.

We still have to wait for a real low light footage because even Vincent Laforet's Nocturne was not shot in a lower street light corners or dark indoors, etc,...
  • SernaStudios.com 2 years ago
Actually I can attest to how dark the location is for Nocturne...I just had a senset/dusk photoshoot in the exact same place in DTLA about 2 months prior to the initial release of his short. The lighting there really sucks.
  • I don´t think aliasing is an issue because we are already counting with it...Don´t forget this was all filmed at 60fps...that is why the aliasing is more evident...funny is that from a few months now I have been more careful when watching movies on TV and most of them have the same aliasing problem...even my favourite TV seris CSI has huge amounts of aliasing artifacts. So to me it doesn´t matter if Canon has it or not...I know when it will show and how to avoid it...Great work Dan.

    Dan,

This piece is definitely better than the one you screened here in SG. Love the slow-mo and my fave shot is still the low angle of the horses.

It was great and inspirational to be helping you for the past week. Have not felt so energetic for a long time! :)

    Take great care!

Cheers for links - I would still argue the first two are a collection of pretty shots as opposed to a story. (I've seen the skywalker ranch already) The coke is one is lovely, and engaged me, and I laughed! That's what stories should do, regardless of what kit you're using.
  • Seiishu 2 years ago
True, but I feel free to disagree (not arguing in any way, not my way, LOL) on the first part. First link I posted is telling such a beautiful story. With simple camera actions and beautiful audio background, good videographer can tell stories and stories. IMHO, Luka succeeded perfectly in doing so. He told us beautiful story, you just have to watch it patiently. It is slow and relaxed, but that's exactly how cemeteries are... This is what he said in its video description:

"...Filmed at the woodland cemetery (skogskyrkogården) in Stockholm. It was the day before all saints day so there were a lot of people visiting graves and lighting candles. There was a very special mood that is difficult to describe, but that I've tried to bring forward in the video. It was somewhat uncomfortable filming people as I felt that I was intruding on something very personal. I have however tried to make the final edit to be as respectful as possible... ...About a week before this was shot I visited the woodland cemetery and shot some handheld footage, basically scouting the place to see if it would be interesting to film something there. I liked it very much - there was a special tranquility there that I thought would be worthwhile to try to capture on film... ...There was a certain subdued mood at the cemetery that I wanted to capture and the final choice of music was made with that in mind..."

Great Dan! I get mine tomorrow, taking it to Prague. Is the 720p the same quality as the 7D as in same aliasing issues?
  • indyflix 2 years ago
Hey Phil, do you think he turned down the sharpness on the 1D at all? I noticed that helps aliasing a lot on my 7D and T1i.
  •
  • David Probst 2 years ago
great edited clip dan! too bad that canon couldnt improve on the aliasing @ 60fps. 59 seconds in the stripe shirt is a bit dissapointing to still see that on this pro body. seems more linear tonally than the 5DmkII though. dp

    Hey Dan,
Great vid, love the wide angles and people shots. As far as the aliasing goes, did you adjust the sharpness at all on the camera settings?? From the looks of it Id say no, but that's only a guess. Any input?
