I dunno how the hell this didn't make it into the top 50, man. This is one of the best vids I've seen in a while, and I'm not just saying that cause Blake is super cute.

Wow. How long did this take to shoot? and how long did it take to edit?

hrmmm...This video took about 3 days to shoot but spread out over a week. Sometimes I would work for an hour or so to get one stop motion shot and then take a break until the next day. I didn't have many takes of things so the editing process was very fast. The color correction, editing and effects only took me about 3 days.

This video is amazing! It's so great that you put attention to the little things, that makes the video so realistic.

    Good job!

I am stunned that this piece took, as you say, " three days". In my inexperienced video mind, I am seeing a staggering amount of work. Are things really less than they appear to be?
  • David Blue Garcia plus 1 year ago
It was a lot of work but I can be a very lazy filmmaker and I have learned many shortcuts along the way.

Excellent job David. Kept me engaged the entire time. Loved the stop motion and you killed the editing. Keep it up!

I saved myself a lot of work by shooting and animating everything at 6 frames a second. This meant a quarter of the work I would have done if I had animated at 24 fps. I did not plan out shots meticulously which gave me more freedom to make and embrace any mistakes.

Really great video. I loved the color grading. May I ask what program you used?
  • David Blue Garcia plus 1 year ago
I used Bridge to do a primary pass on all of the still photos then I used adobe after effects.

I shot in stills so I was able to capture much more latitude then if I had shot video. I did basic color correction in Bridge then I did a few tweaks in final cut pro but nothing major. I wish I knew more about color correction.

wow... that inspired me! Totally wicked pissa concept and amazing soundtrack as well. I see nobody has asked about the flying origami. Can you explain?
  • David Blue Garcia plus 1 year ago
I built an origami crane and shot flight sequences of it against a black background. Then I composited it into the frame by taking out the black. The reason it blends in so well is because I made sure to light it realistically. I also added some motion blur.

OHMAGAWD THIS IS SO COOL I made a film about handing out cranes as Random Acts of Kindness, and the origami crane WAS TRULY my inspiration for doing so. We made over 500 to hand out. And I feel like this film fits the inspiration I received from the crane incredibly well. I love this film!

AWESOME! Can you please give some hints as to how you animated the bird? (And you even gave it a shadow!) And as for animating at 6fps, does that mean you set your camera to shoot at 6 still per second, or did you just click away and take what you needed to produce the desired look?

    Thanks!
  • David Blue Garcia plus 1 year ago
The animation wasn't very scientific. I think it came out to a out 6 frames a second in most cases but I'm not sure.

I filmed the bird against a black background and I made sure to light it as if it were in the scene. I used a kino flo and a lamp.

The shadow of the bird is just a flipped image that I turned grey and made blurry.

    Hope that makes sense.
