1. Blu Dot Real Good Experiment
When we opened our SoHo store in 2008, we were introduced to the resourceful culture of "curb-mining": the act of finding furniture and art on the street. Now that a year has passed, we decided to conduct a curb-mining experiment of our own to celebrate our one-year anniversary in New York.

On November 4-5, 25 Real Good Chairs were dropped around NYC, free for the take. Many were GPS-enabled. Watch the film to see what happened.

Directed by Andrew Zuchero
Produced by Supermarche
Concept by mono

Awesome experiment. Living in MPLS it was driving me crazy hearing about these chairs being given away.
The is one thing I can't figure out, you used a GPS module to track the chairs, so that will give you that lat / lng. How did you figure out what unit they lived in?

Very interesting. I have to wonder, did any of the new chair owners have a problem with the exercise? I mean being tracked, located and contacted?
  • kelly munson 2 years ago
Some people took the GPS out and threw it on the street, others just didn't answer the door when we arrived to film. Surprisingly, people were pretty cool though.

Not just a great idea, but also excellent execution. Cool and warm at the same time. I heart this.

The experiment is useless and the editing, recording and production are very very annoying.
Whats with the soundbooth brit cunt voiceover?
How much coating and lacker do you need to pass your little movie for anything remotely intellectually stimulating?

Well done, incredibly well executed. Great sound design. Lucky finds on the people, I guess you seeded some good neighborhoods, or did a good chair find good homes?

Lovely idea but that lady's voice (the voiceover, the lady who's asking the questions) is really scary and eerie.

    Amazing!
I loved how the INCO that took the black chair didn't have an interview, but you could still tell why she took the chair - judging from the rest of her house, it's modern and black, which is why she thought she had to have it.

Did you guys label "GPS", "Motion Sensor", etc. on every chair?

This video is amazing. I'm curious was this done for fun or was someone funding this project. Seems like a huge endeavor. Loved the music, camera movement, sound design, edit. Very slick production.

It was to celebrate the 1-year anniversary of the Blu Dot SoHo store. We gave chairs away to New Yorkers and invited the new chair owners to our birthday party.

That was freakin' cool! Great story, filming, direction, concept, loved it! I think I'll watch it again! :-) And thank you for allowing us to download it, I hate when people don't allow that! I have so many other ways to download the video, so it's nice to just cut to the chase. Plus, I'm only going to show it to more people!!! :-) Great job!

Great video. How did you shoot such smooth dolly shots of the chairs at the end?
  •
  • Who cares about the video, sound, production. The point here is that this business created a privacy invading, entrapment situation. Granted these individuals ultimately had to give permission for the use of their likenesses, but, please spare me the genius talk. I am sure most will think I am being a bit extreme, but do we actually condone people recording private individuals, and tracking them to their home via gps, in one of the 5 boroughs no less. They're lucky someone wasn't shot. And, yes I am aware that this kind of thing goes on all the time under the guise of security and surveillance, but to celebrate this effort gives me great concern.

Attn: Planet 5D. Shame on you.
