2007: The derelict radio station.
An old abandoned radiostation. Located in the middle of nowhere.
The place was quite intruiging, theres was noone around, just a lot of nature and a few abandoned buildings. All the buildings were locked.
The weather was great, too, and we happened to have a cheap handycam with us.

The radiostation looks great - only pity that it was locked...
Can I have a question? Were the strokes done in 3D or in 2.5D?
Well, I guess it's 3D, the lines were actually done in After Effects, using paricular, linked to a light emitter. That light was moved through AE's 3D space.
The footage was tracked using Matchmoving software (Boujou in this case) first, to rebuild the 2D-footage to a 3D scene beforehand. Amazing software, but quite hard to use on shaky and lowQuality footage like this.
Any more questions, ask away =)
One more question :)
How does Boujou rebuild 2D footage on 3D? Does it cut the footage into multiple layers?
Boujou (and any other Matchmoving app) actually rebuilds the 3d scene literally, so you could use any 3d app to composit objects into the scene, competely matching the camera movement and depth of the scene.
For example, points closer to the camera move faster, relatively to points further away. Based on this difference in speed, the program will be able to derive the relative distance. In the end, you'll end up with a scene full of tracked points (or Nulls) and you'll be able to use these as reference of where you're placing your CG-elements.
It uses a whole lot more of complex mathematical calculations, visit wikipedia and search on "Matchmoving" for more in depth info ^^
Hope this helps!
awesome
:-)
i wish this video would happen in real life.
Master Piece?
And it's pretty weird that a whole radio station could be abandoned. I only wish it would happen to Real Radio in the UK.
Took us about a month to complete.
But I was allowed to go into the building to :D
Very beautiful place.
Did you know that "Mindhunters" was recorded there?
Jammer, want het is erg mooi daarbinnen, en je hebt een waanzinnig uitzicht van bovenaf.
Love the audio as well, and the glitches.
There's an art to this, making top notch compositions like that using footage shot on older low end gear.
One) Do you mean bonjour?
With an R at the end? I can't find the software anywhere.
two) What was that song? I really liked it.
First thing a Google search brings up.
I've also been working with another matchmoving software during my intern. It's called Syntheyes, be sure to check that one out as well :)
You really ROCK!
it would have been awesome in HD!
This place is called RADIO KOOTWIJK, and I happen to live only about 8 miles away from it :) (~13km). (For people who live here: it's very close to Apeldoorn.) To be honest.. I've never been there, but after seeing this I certainly will!!
I seem to have been able to like it twice somehow, it is very special, so i guess that's ok
Well done!
Thanks and great work!
The smoke was stock footage from Art Beats, along with some displacement effects from AfterEffects itself.
Also, I've heard (and seen) some nice footage from the HV20s! I guess thats a good choice for b- or experimental movies. I think its definately the best in that pricerange.
Yeah, I will just be experimenting with the HV20. Bought one a couple of days ago and it's on it's way :) Can't wait!
Love it!
Thanks for listing all of the apps used. Located in the middle of nowhere? Where exactly is nowhere?
The place is called Kootwijk, near Apeldoorn. the first building is Radio Kootwijk, it has some great historical value too.
Very good but it seems you have two strong themes and could have used each separately.
maybe is this a Yan Tiersen song?
What's this song?
When I go back to the academy and see some my teachers, I'll try to ask what the exact trackname is. for now, I'm too busy on my intern, I've still got 2.5 months to go. (hence I'm generally not active here)
As for all the replies, thank you guys!
Leuk om eens Nederlanders te ontmoeten hiero. Ik heb jullie films bekenen. MAN OH MAN!
Haha. Achja, experimenteren aye.
Keep up the good work!
Groeten,
Wouter.
Anyhows, I'll keep it english in case other people have the same question.
Our workflow did not involve that much software. We basically made the mood/storyboard on paper, it was drawn quite detailed by Ecco.
Moving on, the filming done with a simple handycam followed by capturing using winDV, free software.
We did not use a dedicated video editing package, but rather moved the whole thing into After Effects right away. All the cutting happened inthere.
Then came the circus of adding post-effects, still using After Effects and on top of that, 2d3's Boujou 3D-tracking the camera movement. Parallel to this, Thijs and Ecco worked on the audio using Cubase.
There you go :)
It's really nice to see a piece of matchmoving that's just really nice and subtle, rather than something going.. 'HEY LOOK AT WHAT I JUST MADE ON MY COMPUTER!!!' - really nice work... I'm a fan :)
what a place to start a creepy story...
where is this?
