looks to be the same to me. with the same resolution i would expect the same, no?

i can do some more tests if you can give me some feedback.

  • Thought should be changed some algorithm process.
16Mpx of the sensor, it could also vary on the other, n?

    excuse for my English...

I don't understand "feedback" with the sentence. Sorry!
You can make a test with some lines shirt, n?

    Thanks for the test!

The difference in the full frame chip and the 7d's crop sensor is unbelievable. You get so much more out of the 16mm lens on a full frame camera. All 3 cameras do a good job of keeping down noise at 3200 ISO, a very close call.
  • stillmotion pro 2 years ago
this is imagery based. put your hands on the MKIV and you will be sold, or at least we were.

I'm very surprised. They all look pretty similar. I expected the 1d to outperform both cameras at 3200iso. I'm guessing that as you get higher the 1D will blast off. Large sensor size can either be a plus or a minus depending on what you are filming. The 7d and 1d seemed to have better control of rolling shutter over the 5d. Other than that they all seemed similar. Thank you for taking the time to do these test.

i wrote a lot about how they felt and compared on our blog if your interested in seeing any of that

Wow, the high ISO test proves a huge difference with 1D4 being and absolute monster. Having said that I really would only spend this much money on a video camera if I had a guaranteed return on investment. It's not a big secret that 1D4 is a journalistic stills camera and I don't see a huge market for it in indie production.

Very happy with my 5D2 and 7D thank you very much.

mm, i think the 5d and 1d seemed to have better control of rolling shutter over the 7d...

    Thanks for a great test!

Any chance of getting a 1080p version?

On the low light stuff I would love to see camera movement and detail in the blacks. Don't worry so much about shooting full open on the lens... maybe shoot @ 2.8 …. would love to see how much sharpness and color information are captured in low light between the 1D4 and 5D2… if they are using to much in camera noise reduction it will show in the blacks with high frequency detail on camera movement… lock offs kinda hide this… I suspect the 5D2 may be closer to the 1D4 in actual capture.

Do a low light torture test, try to "break" (not really) the cameras so we can see which camera drops first and how it compares.

In your test the 1D4 looks to handle highlights better.

But I really like the FF field of view and will most likely wait for 1Ds4.

Thanks for posting this. Nice work putting this together, but to be honest, I would have preferred if the girl had done a whole lot less moving around in the beginning part. Made it difficult to compare video from the cameras when I couldn't really focus in on a particular part of the image (her face, hair, etc.). Just food for thought for any future comparisons you might do. Again, thanks for posting this; it's still very helpful.

I can see the advantages of the Mark IV, especially the fact that you can still push the ISO to 120,000 which is beyond the other two cameras. However, we still have to consider the cost, 2500 vs 5000 body only, is pretty pricey for this high iso, I don't think the improved quality is worth the cost.

No huge difference between those cameras that means 7D is a pure winner if we watch for the price/performance offer point.
  • GL2 2 years ago
I agree--not a big difference between them, and the 7D holds its own quite well. If I could afford a 1D4, I'd be looking at Scarlet.

  •
  • Patrick, 2 questions:
    - How do these cameras compare to the T1i?
    - Have you ever captured a still from the video feature of these cameras? Can those stills be used to sell 4x6, 5x7 and 8x10 stills?

It is amazing how similar they are with such huge price differences. 1d4 is brilliant in low light!

now, i heve more question. i have mk2, 7d, sennheiser ew100 and tascam dr 100 like you recomended. i have the problem with audio recording. i put sennheiser into dr 100, and put the headphone out of dr100 (set in volume 2-3) into mic of mk2 or 7d. i have problem with syncronize the audio from dr 100, mk2 & 7d. which fps should i choose? my way now is if there are clips showing people talking, i use the camera sound (which pluged with tascam), if there arent, i use tascam sound. the problem is if i pluged dr 100 with mk2 in church & 7d in reception, in my fcp i use 3 diferent audio source, dr 100, mk2 & 7d, which mean i should choose which ones should i rendered. can you help me please.. thxs

the thing to know is the 7D is not good to film during a long time ... after 40mn about, sensor is warming hot !

    but quality is here ...
  •
  • thanks you guys.
This, with the blog review, will help many people to decide what to buy... i still want the 7D but seeing what the 1D can do (specially with the rolling shutter) maybe i should save more money and buy it...

I have had the 7D for a month now and I love it. While vacationing in Hong Kong, I experienced flickering issues under white fluorescent lights in Manual mode. Anyone know if it had to do with frame rates? thx
  • That's more of a shutter issue. Televisions in the US, for example, typically output 60Hz. So if you set your shutter speed to 1/60 the flicker disappears. Try playing with it.

Very good comparo, thank you! Just acquired 7D to complement my 5D2 nature videography.....just waiting on 5D2 firmware update to 24p. Your video confirms the two cameras should work very well together: tight shots (7D) and wide angle/panoramics (5D2).

Good video. 5D's FF sensor is just amazing and the IQ and ISO performance is better than 7D's. 1D beats both when it comes to ISO. 7D and 1D hass little bit less rolling shutter effect.

For video and photography work, 5D is the winner.

Just missin' the T2i guys. Great that you did this test though. ASP-H sure produces a counter-intuitive look in the focal length tests. I'm juuust starting to get used to what "50mm" means on the 7D.
