Wow! this is amazing post-production! I have one question, I am having hard time finding that effect that you used with camera, its called "looks"? is it a plug-in or built-in AE filter?
  • Alex Roman 2 years ago
Thanks! It's a plugin by Red Giant.

That was Incredible! Do you use any custom plugins or scripts to enhance production in 3ds max; in terms of interface or modeling?
  • Warex 3D plus 2 years ago
im 99% sure that its pure 3ds max

Thanks for posting this breakdown, a great resource for all!
One question, why did you enabled the "coverage" channel in the EXR dialog? You didn't seem to reference this channel later in the walkthrough.

yeah the After Effect part is crazy. I didn't get why you put a chromatic aberation in looks? -3 then +3 does that change anything ? :)
  • gavin shapiro plus 2 years ago
One channel goes back, the other goes forward, and they look offset
  • Mathieu Babin 2 years ago
hmmmm, na I don't think it's that, he's doing it on the red/cyan channel then the blue/yellow so the blue shouldn't be offset (and I actually don't really see an offset on the final picture),plus the value are really smal (+0.3) I tried it on a project and you don't really see the offset, but the image look a little bit sharpen and punchy. I guess that's what Alex was trying to achieve, but ... can't be sure ^^ anyway, the guy knows what he is doing for sure ... :)
  • Guido Elgueta 2 years ago
The values are subject to the resolution of the image. The color aberration happens toward the edges, while the centre of the image remains the same.

    Breathtaking work!

I'm curious what your workflow is for the focus/DOF.... Your render passes clearly show that being done as a post-effect, but what method do you use... "Lens Blur", or a 3rd party plugin? It's shockingly photo-real.
  •
  • Drunik 2 years ago
Awesome video Alex. I am a big fan of you. Tell me please one thing that I dont get: the Magic Bullet Looks plugin works in 32bit mode or in 8 bit? I've just tried it and it seems to me that the plugis does work in 8bit mode ("exposure" tool). Something strange. But in this video it looks like "Looks" works in 32bits for you. What's a trick?
  •
  • Which plug-in you have used for a DoF please?
  •
  • jan duda 2 years ago
Thanks for showing the making of, id also greatly appreciate if you could tell us which effect/plugin did you use throughout the film for the DoF (with z-depth channel). thanks a lot.
  • Well since he using Red Giant software I can only guess that he was used their Image Lounge/True Camera Rack Focus plug-in.
  • Andreu Taberner 2 years ago
Lenscare by Frischluft for the DOF, as long i remember from his Autodesk Area tutorial.
  •

I am excited to find out which plug-in you used for the Depth of Field. I know its Red Giant, but which one? The Composite Wizard or Image Lounge/TrueCamera Rack Focus? Amazing work! Cheers!

Alex.... Wow, what an achievement. I've shown this to my students all this week. First comes the " It has to be real, Doesn't it?" and then comes the "How long does that take to render?"
But really...How long does that take to render?

  •
  • Joeri Kassenaar 2 years ago
I'm wondering how your post effects will work on stereo (Reel3d), do you have any experience with that?
I'm thinking the effects will stick to the screenplane.
So how do others fix that? No CC in post, or camera (eye) aware software?
Thanks for sharing. You're a real gem.

after all those comments i don't think if i need to address that how great is your work. someone up their sad you're the lord. yup you truly are a CG GURU... no but more than Guru. I have never seen such a realistic CG stuff. Ok we see movies and all and that CG is pretty awesome but never we get the chance to notice that CG because of all the action going on the screen But this piece of art is still amazing in a sense that we get to notice every bit of detail in that slow camera motion. The DOF was shockingly awesome. I haven't ever in my life seen such an amazing work. I'm not a 3d artist but i can say it really takes lotsa experience to get to this point. You're undoubtly on the top of the CG artists around the world. HATS OFF to you Alex. Though i've seen the making and behind the scene stuff but still i hesitate to believe that it was all CG, its just so realistic. I never imagined if CG can be this real. Every bit of detail is so original and natural, i'm beginning to ask myself a question, the world around me is CG or REAL. :)
  • unusingur 1 year ago
while seing the movie i was shocked to discover that it included cg elements and i said at first this was a let-down. i mean, huge water bubbles? why the fantasy? then it got to the flying books and pages and that, while clearly cg, it seemd to me very poetic, so i liked instantly. in the end i just loved the movie, and after that i found it was all a cg (didn't readed the coments before), so i had my moment of blank stare not knowing what to think about it. but that because i knew it was just awesome :)

Can somebody tell me the best way to get into creating CG. Roman has inspired me greatly in what the possibilities of CG are and I would like to do some beginner stuff for myself. Thanks in advance!
  • unusingur 1 year ago
look for some free modelling programs. i think in cg the most important parts, even more important than the modeling itself, is how to create the materials and how to set the lights in a scene.

It's pretty cool that you are able to make something much more amazing and stunning than all of the people working in a big production hollywood movie... All of the 5 minutes credits from a CG deppartment, in a single man.
I wish for you (and for all of us as an audience), greater projects to come.

Thx Lorne! Found it! Lenscare is the most affordable option.

"Indeed, the blurring is accomplished using the Z-Depth Channel in AE. There are several plugins for this task (Irisfilter, Lenscare, DofPro, etc.). And it's pretty simple."

Is it possible to use a plug in like Lenscare in a video to rack te focus of the video in after effects?. On lets say a grid to get that dept of field. I think the answer is no but asking anyway!

Sure hope you sit down for an interview to discuss your approach to your work. Stunning, can barely find words to describe it. I am afraid to see what you do when 3D leaves the movie theater comes to our flat screens at home. I was more blown away by your short film than the $400 million dollar Avatar.

Hi Alex. A few questions if you dont mind me asking.

How have you captured the lens blur? Did you use a camera with a depth of field and render it that way, or did you do this all in after effects?

What computer did you use to render this on? Was it just on one computer? How much ram?

This really is a truely amazing peice of work. The remarks from everyone are well deserved.
