Researchers, designers, and educators have identified scientific practices as a central goal of reform. Science practices—engaging in scientific argumentation from evidence, to develop, apply, and refine explanatory models—is central in the recently released Next Generation Science Standards. Reiser will review the motivation and research-based arguments for this increased emphasis on scientific practice in K-12 science reform, and describe his group’s design and research program to support students and teachers in scientific practices in elementary and middle school classrooms.
