The anatomy of a sunset can be analyzed in so many ways. How does the light of the sun interact with the atmosphere as the angle of its incident light travels more horizontally through the earth's atmosphere? The interaction of the electrons of so many gaseous, liquid, and solid atoms and molecules at sunset is more complex than we will ever care to imagine, and the result, visually can be so sublime. Following this rather scientific line of thought, you can actually see the affect of the angle of the sun's light in this time lapse shot. In the daytime the sun's rays strike the top of clouds and this accounts for the silver lining and the dark underbelly appearance of afternoon clouds. In the evening the sunlight is so low that it lights the bottoms of clouds, especially those that are higher in the atmosphere. In combination with the fact that the sun's low-angled light is passing through much more color-filtering air and evening dust, this low lighting assumes its regal scarlet and golden hues. I call these glorious lighting conditions everybody-looks-great-light. Even a cement wall can suddenly look beautiful and exquisite when bathed in the light of our nearest setting star.
