This is a quick look at the Interactive Collaborative Environment I've built at Edinburgh Napier University.

A little detail...
It has multiple touch enabled surfaces including four 42" HD dual touch screens, one 46" HD multitouch screen and a 108" multitouch table. The software is a mix of Windows 7, OS X and Linux but the table runs PyMT. The walls are digitally augmented whiteboards which capture anything written anywhere. This is a functioning meeting room as well as a research platform for novel UI and UX. The room will officially open it's door in Jan 2010.

Hi Nathan, glad you like it! People are welcome to come and have a hands on demo of the room, we'll be opening officially probably mid Jan as we finish off all the last bits and bobs. Just drop me a line to arrange a day in the new year.

Great stuff Oli! Can you tell me what kind of 46" HD multitouch screen and a 108" multitouch table do you use?
  •
  • Oli Mival plus 2 years ago
Hi, the 46" screen is from multitouch.oy, a Finnish spinout who worked on the Helsinki city wall. The table is a bespoke creation consisting of 2 Epson Xdesk's in a cabinet we designed and commissioned and made for us by London company Engage.

This is really good, the setup and its execution is just brilliant. Great work!

What Operating System is the table running, and what are the specs of the computer running it?

    That table is amazing :)

(Its what my table aspires to be :) )

The table's running Vista Professional on 2 seperate 3.16Ghz core2Duo PC's. One PC does the detection and sends a TUIO stream to the other which handles the software and projection. The demo in the video uses pyMT 0.3.

Awesome :p I presume you are using 2 projectors..?

i've always had problems trying to run python apps on windows :( Any advice you can give me?

Also, are you using DI mt method on the table?
  •
  • Oli Mival plus 2 years ago
Yep it's 2 Epson short throw projectors and the table does indeed use DI for multi-touch. Regarding python the guys to talk to are the crew at pyMT, really nice guys and very helpful (pymt.txzone.net/).

    Final Questions:

What is your diffusing surface/ projection surface
and what type of IR illuminators are you using?

    Thanks again :)

Fantastic product! The video shows mainly how visual material is displayed and shared.
Can it also be modified by the collaborators during the meeting?
    Will this solution be commercialized?

What I miss here is something else than just playing with pictures around. I like the integration between the whiteboard and the computer, and its also nice to see some of the python MT apps running. But all I really see is just a really big multitouch table and a few touch tvs on the walls.
The place looks great and so on, but what is new about this? What are your contributions to the collaboration domain?
