My daughter and I created this presentation for her Montessori class (grades 1-3) to explore the importance of sunlight and role of timekeeping in human evolution. We discussed how solar and lunar events and things like the Aurora Borealis or comets may have appeared to primitive peoples. Were they good omens, bad omens, or evidence of something supernatural?
Whomever could predict events through timekeeping and deductive reasoning would be seen as having special powers important to their group's survival and success. Does this have anything to do with the emergence of religion? How do these solar and lunar cycles correspond to traditional festivals or current religious holidays?
