28 Days after delivery we have a tank load of fry. This experience has been one like I had not imagined. The children have been eager to learn more and more every day.
We've recently completed three dimensional sculptures of Rainbow Trout with our art teacher. Our huge display board in our hallway is used to update the entire school on the progress of our fish. The other students in the school had so many questions that our class decided to post a wondering wall where students could post their questions.
My students then have researched and responded to each of these questions (over 50 different questions at this point) and posted the answers on our 'Got Trout Questions" Wall. Every day a parade of students of all ages come by the room to check on their progress.
My proudest moment has been when I stepped away and allowed students from my class to explain the life cycle of the trout and the steps we go through each day to monitor the water quality in the tank.
Today, as students were making observations and updating their trout journals with thoughts and illustrations of the tank, one student summed up the project in a very succinct way: "Trout are cool!"
Yes, they are. What is even cooler is how interested and engaged they are as learners in this project.
Thank you Trout Unlimited for sponsoring us in this project.
