A well-known surgeon was about to operate on a young farmhand who was suffering from cancer of the tongue. As his students crowded around the operating table, he made his final preparations. He warned his patient that even in the best of cases, the operation would leave him unable to speak.
“If you have a last wish or anything you want to say out loud, you had best say it now,” suggested the professor, “and remember, these are the last words you will ever utter. Once the operation is over and you wake up, you will be dumb.”
