Jefferson Barracks served as a medical center, arsenal, engineer depot, recruit rendezvous and training depot, cooks school, musicians school and prisoner of war camp. Various famous Generals, US Presidents, movie stars and sports figures were stationed or visited here.
Served a s an organizational base where units such as the Regiment of Dragoons, the Regiment of Mounted Riflemen and the First and Second Cavalry got their start.
Probably no other military facility had such a varied role in American history. Jefferson Barracks remained a vital cog in the Army's role during the westward expansion.
I am an educator/ museum tech at the site and producer of this video. This is a story that needs to be told.
