I grew up in my family owned and operated non-profit repertory theater, The Coleman & Smith Artistic Company. Because my family owned and operated COLSAC, my involvement in the theater was non-negotiable, so I was usually assigned state management duties on most productions. From the booth, I watched and participated in many professional, independent and student productions of all genres and of a multitude of playwrights. I started out as a disgruntled adolescent, envious of my peers who lived a more normal life, but as I got older, I began to realize my love for the arts and I participated in it often. As time progressed and I became an adult, my family migrated to producing films and from that, my love for cinematography was revealed to me.
I always knew I wanted to be involved in the entertainment industry, but could never quite figure out my purpose. I was very good at a lot of things, but was never satisfied with the work I produced, until I picked up the Panasonic AVX100b and helped my family shoot pick-up shots for their first full length independent feature, "In The Closet". "In The Closet" went on to win Best Religious Film at the San Diego Black Film Festival in 2009 and from there, the rest was history.
Several years later, I find myself shooting and doing post-production work on projects for not only my family, but many different artists and production companies on a regular basis. I love the ability to tell a story through motion picture- the art of utilizing angles, framing and blocking to create beautiful works of art that are meaningful as well as visually appealing. Even looking back on family portraits, I find myself vacant from the picture as I was usually the one holding the camera. Being in the booth those many years as a child developed me to see the stage (and even the world) through a frame.
Cinematography is a lasting part of me, with a strong theatrical background. I use cinematography everyday whether I am holding a camera or not.
My cinematography demo reel. I handpicked some shots from recent projects that I felt would adequately showcase my abilities as a cameraman and cinematographer. I picked all of the shots- making the most of the equipment I had readily available. I hope you enjoy!
Everything was shot, edited and color corrected by me.
