On hearing that the City of Los Angeles' float for the Rose Parade would include a rendition of the Watts Towers
it just seemed right to honor Sam Rodia with a tower of snow in Spring Lake. It was fashioned of fresh snow, cupplant stalks, bittersweet vines and berries, glass bottles, and roses. Due to several factors (mostly lack of skill and a warm snap in between sub-Z temps) it lost its tower shape and took a lumpy form, and "went south," literally.
On the occasion of the end of one year and the beginning of another, a humble tribute to Sam Rodia, Tito Schipa, and Andy Karzas. Lisa Stone, New Year's Day 2014
