The story of the first marathon ever run.
In the year 490 B.C. the Persian Empire, ready to expand their territory and move into Europe,
landed a large force on the plains of Marathon, Greece, prepared to attack.
Outnumbered 4 to 1, the Greek army launched a surprise attack against the Persians, and by days end 6,400 Perisans were left dead. The remaining Persians retreated out to sea in hopes of attacking Athens before the Greek army could reassemble there.
Pheidippides, a messenger in the Greek army, was sent on foot to warn the people of Athens of the impending attack. He successfully delivered the message, thus saving Athens, and thwarting the Persian attempt to conquer. This allowed the Greek Empire to expand and give birth to Western Culture as we know it today.
Pheidippides died immediately after alerting Athens of the impending attack.
Some say it was the most important message ever delivered...
