40. Temenos, a very quiet place: Canon 5D mark II, 1080/30p
2 years ago
Just spent the weekend at Temenos, a retreat on a small mountain in Massachusetts. There was no electricity, phone service or water. The temperature was below the freezing point, windy conditions and approx one foot of snow. Please visit my blog to find out about the technical challenges during this shoot

Very good sir. I am terrible at video, I thought my 7d would help...no dice. You have to have the vision for video and you clearly do!
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 years ago
thank nixter. don't give up, don't try too hard, play around with it

That is a graceful, stark, yet beautiful video. Glad to see you shot it in B+W. Probably wouldn't have mattered now that I think about it. Were you alone out there or with a group of monks? :o)
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 years ago
thanks Mike. can't help it with my b/w obsession. I was the monk while looking at the trees and then there was my gf (monk time out)

The film and edit is great and up to your usual quality of work. Maybe the music was a little too dramatic for this "quiet place".
  • Make Some Tea plus 2 years ago
I dare to disagree. I think winter wilderness is more dynamic than the common assumption. The wind and the extreme light contrasts create surrounding that's very special... magical, I would say, but this word is very much overused these days. I digg the soundtrack.
  • RogerB1 plus 2 years ago
Actually I like the soundtrack also. Just wondering about it's place in this film. :o)

  • Great video Mike. The trees seem to be dancing.

Absolutely stunning work, mate. I'm really looking forward to do something in black and white. This video gives me more motivation to move my ass and get out there. Well done Mike.

Now you're talking my language. Wilderness. Very different than your usual NY people scene. I really like it.

    Thanks for sharing.

Hi Mike, great work you have here. I do appreciate the kind of "home-schooling" that one can have with Vimeo and you nice guys. I have to ask something... now that the firmware for the 5D (24p/25p) is coming out, is there anything better on the 7D than there is on the 5D (price exclusive)?

    Cheers,
    am
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 years ago
Hi Andre, once we have the firmware for the 5d2 assuming we will get 24/25p and 60/50p it will be king again.

about 1,45 its rememberme this picture (tallercinco.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/en-el-mudo-corazon-mr.jpg), that call "En el mudo corazón del Bosque" (In the mute heart of the forest). but this is inspirated in the coigüe trees from Reserva Nacional Tolhuaca, in Curacautín Chile. Nice work

So, if you one has the dough, it should buy the 5D and not the 7D?

    cheers,

  • indyflix 2 years ago
If you need variable framerates now, go 7D, if you can wait a bit, go 5D. It might take awhile for the firmware update...
  • André Marques plus 2 years ago
I can wait some months, I think. I have the idea that the 5D is an overall better camera, and the difference I can get between one and the other is +- 700 euros more.

Love the slow pans, makes the trees look so graceful in what sounds like pretty raw conditions, but worth it. Beautiful, thanks Mike. Will be getting the 5D soon but trying to figure out what lens to get first?
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 years ago
thanks Robert. depends on what you shoot. I really like my 24-70 2.8 sigma

Pretty tense Mike and and wonderful as always.
It seems the apparent "crappy" codec in the 5D holds up well even on difficult conditions like tree branches.
    Nicely done

thanks GO. yes, it is fine. flattening the tone curve def helps maintain lots more information for later grading.

Nice images and atmosphere from an impressive scenery. B&W is also an excellent choice for this one. Trees are almost scary when seen from below. Must have been cold out there :)
