See all Show me
Introducing the first user-generated HD Video Contest where photographers become filmmakers, and we all see beyond the still. To kick off the contest, Canon asked me to interpret what story I saw beyond the still, and to tell that story with the new Canon EOS 7D. My short film will be the first chapter of seven, each ending with a still photograph for the next aspiring filmmaker to interpret. Posing the question to everyone, what do you see beyond the still?

Learn more about the contest and watch my short film "The Cabbie" here - vimeo.com/groups/beyondthestill

This video was Directed, Shot and Edited by Blake Whitman. Additional cameras by Brian King and Sean O'Brien.

Hey guys thanks! So we're doing a bit of a soft launch for this one right now - b/c my thoughts is that everyone is on vacation - I'm going to make another annoucement on January 4th when I think everyone gets back in from the holiday vacation. This contest REALLY has wheels. Both Canon and Vimeo are putting a lot of energy and time behind it - and it could be really really exciting!
  • Hey Vincent,

First, I want to say what an awesome concept this is for a contest! I love it!

Secondly, I am curious if the poorer people, like myself, who can only afford an HDV camera like the Canon HV40/HV40 will still be eligible. I hope so! :D

    Thirdly, HAPPY NEW YEAR!

    Take care,
    Matt

I'd like to reiterate what Vincent said above. We are extremely excited about this contest and can't wait to see what everyone creates based of of Vincent's short film premiering on the 7th here on Vimeo.

This contest has amazing potential to open up collaborate filmmaking to the community and we hope everyone who is eligible will participate! The prizes are fantastic. More info coming on the 7th!

This is absolutely mind blowing. Just the behind the scenes footage alone is inspiring beyond belief.

Can't wait to see the short film and embark on a contest that'll put the astronomical creativity that the users from this site have to offer to the limit and beyond.
  • >Just the behind the scenes footage alone is inspiring beyond belief.

I am a bit worried that small cameras are used but major gear (see the steadycam). Hope some good low budget films will kick ass.

    The idea is phantastic though.

I'm way to amateur to enter, but I'm so excited to see what everyone else does.

The movie behind the still concept has always been a drive for me in both photography, film and general art.

Even taking that concept and painting: implying an entire story with motion and sounds and feelings and sticking it into one still image.

    That's art.

RE INTERNATIONAL ENTRIES: Let me say this - and I am definitely speaking out of turn - i.e. I don't have the authority to speak on anyone's behalf other than myself (you see- lawyers ruin all of our lives in some way or another :( ) Anyway- we are quite sensitive to the fact that there are tremendously talented filmmakers outside of the US. I myself am a naturalized American and hold dual-citizenship with France (don't hold that against me ;) )

So I personally want to open this up somehow. We're looking to find a way to make it happen for everyone in SOME way - but there are some real legal issues at play here. SO I MAKE NO GUARANTEES - but if we can - we'll do something to include everyone. Fair enough?
  • Gavin Owens plus 2 years ago
Good for you Vincent as it was the one thing I was thinking about when reading the contest rules.
After all, the film starts at an airport..... the next chapter could go to just about anywhere.

This is totally awesome! Honestly, this is a good way to inspire people that may not have used their video recording feature on their SLR or even their video cameras in a long time to really get started. It seems like a fantastic way to really spread some creativity around.

I'm looking forward to seeing the results even if I don't actually go film anything myself.

Anyone know the name of the gear at 01:15 and where to get it?
  • bk 2 years ago
It's called a "slider". It's pretty much a baby dolly for DSLRs, which allows the lens to sit really, really close to the ground.
  • Neustock Media 2 years ago
You can get that particular slider from Glidetrack glidetrack.com/ Alastair is a good guy with a very reasonably priced product.
  • Vincent Laforet pro 2 years ago
the slider you see in the BTS video are actually Alastair's Glidetrack - I use the .5 m and the 1.5 m as well - really really nice slider - I've use 3-4 other brands. Some are smoother - some are longer. This one is SOLID. Great to travel - incredibly easy to set up - perfect for DSLR.

    Blake,
Do you have a transcription of The Story Beyond the Still - Behind The Scenes by Vincent Laforet ? I know some very talented individuals who are from other countries than those that speak English. They can read written English well, however, they have a difficult time understanding it spoken. If this contest is open to people around the globe, then I would like to provide this information to them. Also, if it is open to people from around the world and you do not have a transcription, I will put on my ear plugs and transcribe it for them. Either way it is best, please let me know.

this contest is actually for people, who has the most expensive cameras and the most expensive equipment, of course their films will be better than someone's who doesnt have so much money to buy all of this stuff.
to my mind canon(or who hold this contest) should take into account this fact and should only allow people with small budget to take part in it, because only THIS will help them to find new talents...
all of these professional filmmakers has just almost everything they need, but sometimes their films are worse than films, made by someone with a cheap camera and a standard tripod...
  • Blake Whitman staff 2 years ago
This contest is open to anyone in the US who owns an HD camera, you don't need fancy equipment to come up with something creative. In fact, as a judge, I'll be looking for entries which push the boundaries of both story telling and style. The most important thing here is to have fun and let the creative juices flow!
  • Rokkas plus 2 years ago
    some questions:
    - why the US only?
    - i thnik u have some friends here who would like to take part in this contest, how are u going to judge them?
    - and again, i was talking about another thing, i was trying to say that if someone's idea is better, but filming wasnt as perfect as a professional has, how will u judje them, bc at this point money can be the determinant factor

    thank you!
  • Blake Whitman staff 2 years ago
US only because of legal reason for prizes and eligibility. It sucks, but I still think it's worth it to participate to show the awesome line-up of judges what you got.

Everyone will be judged on a variety of different criteria, but I will tell you that you do not need fancy equipment to win.
  • infinite trails plus 2 years ago
Participate and putting huge effort in there without really participating? That's a joke, right?

"The purpose of this contest is to help spread the excitement amongst all of YOU. To make everyone feel like you/they/we can partake in this technological paradigm shift." (Email Vincent Laforet)

Funny, but YOU guys excluded most people on this planet to take part in your great contest.
