My final piece for art 551 dealt with the ideas of control and comfort. The viewer has minor control over the work’s audio and visual output but in order to interact with the work the viewer must view an altered projection of himself or herself, which they have no control over. Also, the viewer is in a sort of home theater setting which I believe is normally considered a relaxing and comforting experience, but the viewer is instead shown a somewhat eerie self-portrait and the work emits loud, aggressive, odd noises. Overall I wanted to explore how the viewer’s level of comfort changes when having a degree of control over an aggressive work.

This piece uses max MSP to take video of the viewer and alter its brightness, contrast, and saturation levels. Then the RGB levels are used to manipulate the frequency of 6 different audio channels, which are what the viewer is hearing. The video is projected onto a screen and the audio is put out through a speaker system. The viewer is in control of the 6 audio channels by using buttons, which are put into Max through the Create USB interface. While interacting with the work the viewer is seated in front of the projection and the work is lit by standing lamp next to the seat
