The Lord be with you.
And with your spirit.
Proclamation of the Holy Gospel according to Saint Matthew.
Glory to you O Lord.
Jesus coming from Galilee appeared before John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. John tried to refuse him with the protest " I should be baptized by you, yet you come to me." Jesus answered, "Give in for now we must do this if we would fulfill all of God's demands." So john gave in. After Jesus was baptized he came directly out of the water, suddenly the sky opened and he saw the spirit of God descend like a dove and hover over him, with that voice from the heavens said "This is my beloved son, my favor rests on him."
The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.
♪Wade in the water, wade in the water children who wadein the water, Gods going to trouble the water, o wade in the water, wade in the water children, wade in the water, Gods going to trouble the water♪ I have the privilege of leading pilgrimages to the holy land and the highlight of the pilgrimage every year is going to the river Jordan. People have the opportunity to actually get down in the water and to renew their baptismal promises and everybody is excited about taking pictures, everybody's excited and they get in and then there’s this cool water and sometimes it’s downright cold and some people just can't wait to get into the water, and then they're in a hurry to get out. It's amazing and I think that somehow that reflects our baptismal promises. We're very excited about getting in and then the next thing you know we want to get out. We forget about all that we have promised, we forget about all the opportunities that come before us to do good to other people. Sometimes, especially those of us who drive, can just completely forget that we're Christian altogether but we are called on this day to remember what it is that we're baptized into, a faith, a faith that Jesus Christ has given us. A faith and an opportunity to do good for others, just like John, sometimes we have to give in. We have to give in to all of our promises, we have to give in to all of our differences, we have to give in to all of the things that would take us away and remember what it is that we're being baptized into. The last time I stood in the river Jordan I was reminded of how little things can pick at you, there were little fish all grabbing around my feet and I kept thinking to myself, this is what our baptism like. Sometimes there are things picking at us from all different sides but we have to remember why we're in the water in the first place. And that’s why it’s always good to remember that we, just like everybody else, have to renew our promises. ♪wade in the water, wade in the water children, wade in the water, Gods going to trouble that water♪ And so once again on page 31 in our booklet we make our profession of faith.
