This video is intended for students studying MA Illustration and MA Graphic Design (via online, distance learning) at the University of Hertfordshire.

This discussion aims to help you develop your studio practice. It identifies how you can learn from the work of others, without producing something derivative.

As an MA student you need to show that you are aware of the work of other artists, illustrators and designers, and that your own work has been directly informed by their practice. However, you also need to demonstrate originality. This means that you need to be able to distinguish between derivation and inspiration - i.e., work that derives from, or is inspired by, the work of someone else.
