At the "Commercial Project" level of the Digital Film curriculum, students are encouraged to collaborate and produce actual commercial projects, adding ever greater doses of real-world production and post-production realities. This is an excellent example of a commercial project, more or less an EPK, electronic press kit. Made for local band 'This is Soul' helmed by Brad Faucher , this project involved extensive filming in low-light situations, in very difficult public dining club where discretion was imposed. Students really teamed up and worked very hard to create this piece, collaborating with instructor as well as the musicians, spending many more hours than expected, and in the process gaining invaluable skills. Musicians in the band besides Brad Faucher include soul artists Lewis West, Lee Lundy (Solomon Burke, Carla Thomas) as well as amazing musicianship from Bruce McGrath & John Morricone on horns; Shinishi Otsu on keys and Roscoe Hamer on drums (Solomon Burke, Lionel Richie, Clarence Carter) .Rotating vocalists include Bird Taylor, Philip Pemberton, lead vocalist of Roomful of Blues, Kenny Williams and Stephan Starr. About 80% of filming was accomplished with the Canon 5Dm2 mainly with the 85 ƒ1.2 lens. One of BUCDIA's EX1 was also used, and the piece was edited by Evan Schneider, with assistance & guidance from Brad and Howard Phillips. Despite pretty dreadful sound conditions, Joe Cook, BUCDIA Audio Production alum, provided a great mix. The final tune over the credits, "Powerful Love"is an original composition, and was donated the BU CDIA Studio D Project.
